QUESTION ONE
(a.) Federal University of Technology, Minna plans to harness a surface water source for the supply of
water to Gidan Kwano Campus, draw a schematic/flow diagram showing the treatment the water
would undergo to make it fit for consumption. (3 Marks)
(b.) Assessment of water samples from shallow water wells for usage by Gidan Kwano community
indicates some level of turbidity and presence of E. Coli. Draw a schematic/flow diagram to show
treatment of the water for consumption by inhabitants of this community. If the analyses of the water
samples had given a very high turbidity, what unit operation should have been included in the
treatment process? (6 Marks)
(c.) A water treatment plant designed for a flow of 3 000m3/day is expected to use alum at a rate of 35mg/l.
Assuming density of alum as 900kg/m3, determine:
(i.) Storage volume of alum required annually in m3.
(ii.) The number of bags required annually if a bag weighs 50kg.
(iii.) The cost of purchasing alum annually if alum costs N 30 000/tonne. (6 Marks)
QUESTION TWO
(a.) What are the objectives of preliminary treatment of wastewater? List the unit operations involved.
(4 Marks)
(b.) Discuss common sanitation methods in rural and urban settings like Gidan Kwano village and Minna
township respectively. (5 Marks)
3
(c.) For a total flow of 13,500 m /day, determine the tank dimension of two circular primary
sedimentation tanks of 3.5 m depth that have the following design criteria: The surface overflow rate
should not exceed 60 m3/m2-day and the hydraulic detention time should be at least 1 hour.
(6 Marks)
QUESTION THREE
(a.) What do you understand by the term “Municipal Solid Waste”. List the components of a Solid Waste
management plan. (3 Marks)
(b.) Discuss the primary methods used for landfilling. (6 Marks)
(c.) Determine the total area required for FUTMinna solid waste landfill site with a projected life of 10
years that is to serve a population of 10,000 generating 1.2 kg solid waste/person-day. Assume the
density of the solid waste is 200 kg/m3 when picked up, 400 kg/m3 in the truck and 600 kg/m3 after
compaction at the landfill site. Assume the height of the landfill to be 8 m. (6 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR
