3)
Why do you think architects still use these elements when designing buildings today?
Think of the buildings in your community. Is there a building that uses the elements you listed above? If so,
what type of building is it?

Think back to the video on slide 12. The architect talked about the features a sustainable
home should have in its design. List three of those features below.

Starting at 4:02 in the video, the architect talks about how important using recyclable and
renewable materials are in sustainable architecture. Renewable and recycled materials help
conserve natural resources and reduce energy use in construction. However, there is a
difference between the two:
Renewable materials can recover fast to keep pace with how quickly they’re used.
Therefore, the materials do not run out and energy is not being used to make more.
Recyclable materials are parts of buildings, roads, or bridges that can be used to
construct or renovate other buildings or structures. It’s stuff that would be thrown into a
landfill if it were not being used again to build something else.

Building Materials for Eco-Friendly Construction.” Find two examples of renewable
materials and recycled materials. List them below.

Slide #14
Pretend you’re an architect and have a client who is an Eagle Scout. Like all Scouts, he is
very conservation-minded. He also wants you to design a sustainable, eco-friendly home for
him and his family on a large piece of property. Your client’s home will be in a hot, dry
environment that gets lots of sun and very little rain.
Knowing the environment in which your client lives, what are 2 features you can
include in your design and the purpose it serves in making your client’s home
sustainable and eco-friendly? There can be many answers, so be an architect and get
creative. Just remember, as a sustainable architect you want to work with the environment in
which the house will be built. Not against it.
Feature What purpose will this feature serve in the home?
Slide #15
Reusing existing buildings has been called the wave of the future for sustainable architecture. What do you
think are 3 benefits to turning an old building into a whole new space instead of creating a completely new
building?

Slide #18
Look at your interview and see what your client requires for their new home. You should see
some connections between your client’s lifestyle and the requirements they have for their
new home and property.
Based on what you know about your client’s requirements and lifestyle, list 3 features you
think you should include in your design and why you think your client would want this
feature in their new home.
Feature Why you think your client want this feature in their home
Slide #19
Building a new home is not cheap, so you want to be sure you meet your client’s goals. Look at the answers
your client gave in the interview, especially why they want a new home in the first place. What are 2 goals
your client wants the most from their new home? For example, do they want more space, better layout, more
sustainable, etc?
