Assignment on ANOVA
Name: Pawar Shubham Roll Number: 220003059
Objective:
To determine whether the mean durability (lifespan) of the different paint brands is significantly
different. If the ANOVA test shows a significant difference (p-value < 0.05), the company can conclude
that at least one brand performs better (or worse) than the others.
Factors:
Independent Variable: Paint Brands
Levels (Treatments): Different brands (ex: Asian Paints, Dulux Paints etc.)
Dependent Variable (Replications): Durability of paints
Hypothesis:
Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no significant difference in paint brands (1 = 2 = 3 = 4).
Alternative Hypothesis (H1): At least one paint brand has a significantly different
durability.
ANOVA (Analysis of Variance):
Method-1: Using Microsoft Excel Data Analysis Tool
In this method, I used the data analysis tool in Microsoft Excel to perform ANOVA for the stated
objective. I generated observations for each level of treatment using a normal distribution with the
help of the statistics mentioned in the table below.
= 0.05
Brand Asian Paints Berger Paints Nerolac Paints Dulux paints
Sample Mean 14.39 17.92 23.4 26.74
Sample Std. Deviation 3.59 3.47 3.70 2.83

Table 3: ANOVA
Since F > F-critical, we reject the null hypothesis.
Method-2: Using procedure taught in class
= 0.05
Correction Factor (C) = 42,477.21 MSTR = 761.23
Total sum of squares (SST) = 3402.78 MSE = 11.65
Treatment sum of squares (SSTR) = 2283.71 F = 65.34
Error sum of squares (SSE) = 1119.07 F-critical = 2.7
Since, F > F-critical, we reject the null hypothesis.
Result:
We reject the null hypothesis using both methods.
Conclusion:
Based on the ANOVA test, since F > F-critical, we reject the null hypothesis (H0). This indicates that
there is a statistically significant difference in the mean durability among the different paint brands. At
least one brand has a durability that differs significantly from the others.
