Lesson Plan: How We Keep Healthy

Grade Level: Common Core (Morocco)

Subject: English as a Foreign Language (EFL)

Unit: How We Keep Healthy

Lesson Duration: 45 minutes

Lesson Objectives:
- Students will be able to use modal verbs (must, mustn't, don’t have to) correctly.

- Students will be able to discuss healthy and unhealthy habits.

- Students will improve their conversational skills through role-playing.

Materials Needed:
- Textbook (Unit 6: How We Keep Healthy)

- Whiteboard and markers

- Printed worksheets (including exercises from the textbook)

- Flashcards with health-related vocabulary

Lesson Structure:

1. Warm-up (5 minutes)
- Start with a class discussion: "What do you do to stay healthy?"

- Show pictures of healthy and unhealthy habits and ask students to identify them.

- Write key vocabulary on the board (e.g., exercise, balanced diet, fast food, nutrition,
aerobics).

2. Presentation (10 minutes)


- Read the conversation between Mrs. Plump and the doctor from the textbook.

- Explain the meaning and usage of modal verbs:

- **Must** (Obligation) → "You must eat balanced meals."

- **Mustn’t** (Prohibition) → "You mustn’t eat fast food every day."

- **Don’t have to** (No obligation) → "You don’t have to see a nutritionist."

- Write example sentences on the board and explain the difference.


3. Practice (15 minutes)
- **Activity 1:** Fill in the blanks using must, mustn’t, or don’t have to (from textbook
exercise 3).

- **Activity 2:** Pair work – Role-play:

- One student is a doctor, and the other is a patient.

- They discuss health problems and give advice using must and mustn’t.

- Example:

- "I feel tired all the time."

- "You must sleep at least 8 hours."

- **Activity 3:** Rewrite sentences using modal verbs (from textbook exercise 4).

4. Production (10 minutes)


- **Group Work:** Write 10 health rules (5 things to do, 5 things not to do).

- Each group presents their health rules to the class.

5. Wrap-up (5 minutes)
- Review key points from the lesson.

- Ask students to share one health rule they will follow from now on.

- Assign homework: Write a short paragraph about their daily healthy habits.

Assessment:
- Participation in class discussion.

- Accuracy in completing exercises.

- Creativity and fluency in role-playing activity.

- Group presentation of health rules.

Homework:
- Write a paragraph (5-6 sentences) about personal health habits using must, mustn’t, and
don’t have to.
