Today’s Work
Reading/Activities in the textbook
1) Read Page 129 to 130, complete part A to D of the investigation from those pages.
Make a table with your answers as stated in part A.
Draw a very, very simple graph in the table for each.
You will be handing this part in tomorrow at the start of class.
2) Read page 132 to 135: Examples 1, 2, and the summary.
Make your own study notes on things you learn from these examples.
This is how to students generally study in university.
Do the reading, make lots of notes, study the notes.
3) Complete the following textbook questions: Page 136 to 137 #1 to 8

Finding an Equation Given the Zeroes and a Point
To write an equation in factored form, we need the x-intercepts (zeroes) and at least one
more point (often the y-intercept, but any point will do)
Example 1
Write the equation of a cubic function that has zeroes at -3, 1, and 4/5
The function also has a y-intercept of 8
Example 2
Write the equation of a quartic function has a single zero at 4 and -1, and a double zero
at 2/3. The function also has f(3)=10
Unit 2 Page 54
You Try
Determine a function for each:
1) A quartic function where , has a single zero at -2, and a triple zero at 3.
2) A quartic function that passes through (-3, 20), has single zeroes at -1, -2, 3/4, and 4.
3) The 5th degree polynomial function that has the following roots: 1 of order 3 and,-2 of
order 2, that has a y-intercept of -12.
4) Using the graph (in lowest order):

Synthetic Division Continued Day
Unit 2 Page 121
Lesson Continued
Recall: Synthetic Division requires a divisor of the form
The Catch: We must divide our final quotient by the number we factored out
Note: This new, modified
divisor is HALF the size of the
original, which means the
quotient will be twice the size,
so we have to divide it by 2
