Utilities
• Argon gas pressure: 500 to 700 kPa
• Cell gas (Helium): 90 to 130 kPa
• Cell gas (Hydrogen): 20 to 60 kPa (if using the H2 option)
• Exhaust duct
• Cooling water
• Drain and rinse tanks
You will need the following standards and solutions for ICP-MS operation:
• Tuning solution (Ex: 10,000 times dilution of P/N 5188-6564: 10 ppm Li, Co, Y,
Ce, Tl)
• Internal standard solution (Ex: 100 times dilution of P/N 5188-6525)
• For P/A factor tuning solutions, use one or more solutions with a
concentration of at least 100 ppb among the calibration standards. (Note that
the concentrations of the standards must be selected so that at least 560,000
cps signals can be obtained in P/A factor tuning). P/A factor is a factor used
to convert a measured value for analog mode into the one for pulse mode.
This is an important tuning for obtaining a calibration curve that is linear
across pulse mode to analog mode. Pulse mode is used to quantitate
relatively low concentrations (ppb). Analog mode is used to quantitate
relatively high concentrations (ppm).
Quantitative Analysis
1 Prepare the calibration solution and samples. You can easily prepare the
calibration solution by diluting mixed standard solutions.
2 If you use the autosampler, set the bottle of each solution in the autosampler.
Semiquantitative Analysis
1 Prepare the standard solution for SemiQuant factor correction and samples.
Each solution should contain approximately 1% nitric acid.
• Sample
• For the standard solution for SemiQuant factor correction, you can use the
tuning solution.
• Cleaning solution (1 to 5% nitric acid)
2 If you use the autosampler, set the bottle of each solution in the autosampler.
The user can execute startup and data acquisition with their own tuning
NOTE parameters easily. For more information, refer to Executing Startup with User Tune
in the online Help.
To display the Startup group, click Configuration from the Startup group on the
NOTE Home tab.
3 Mark the check boxes for the items to be set in the hardware settings.
Usually, mark the check boxes for Torch Axis, EM, Plasma Correction, Standard
Lenses Tune, Resolution/Axis, and Performance Report. Although P/A Factor
can be tuned in Startup, we recommend you tune it in each batch. Here,
Standard Lenses Tune is a tuning that sets the instrument to the basic setting
state and is different from the auto tune that optimizes for the analysis used
in each batch.
Each Startup item works properly when a standard nebulizer is used. The
NOTE standard nebulizers are as follows.
• For x-lens: MicroMist and Mira Mist nebulizers
• For s-lens: MicroMist and Microflow (200) nebulizer
If you use another nebulizer, do not execute a Startup to adjust each item at this
stage, but after plasma ignition, do a custom tune to adjust the items in each
batch.
Resolution/Axis auto tune checks the peak position of the highest peak found in
NOTE a 3 u window around the reference mass. Make sure that the solution that you
introduce contains only the elements that are used for autotuning (i.e. Li(7),
Y(89), Tl(205) in most cases). If you use a different solution for autotuning, then
make sure to choose a mass that does not have a higher peak adjacent to it.
For example:
• Don’t select Li(7) if a high concentration of Li(6) is being introduced as an
on-line internal standard.
• Don’t select Y(89) when NIST Glass is being analyzed by laser ablation, as
Sr(88) will be a higher peak.
When the Instrument Status pane or Status Viewer dialog box is displayed, you
NOTE can turn on the plasma by double-clicking the status indicator on which "Standby"
is displayed.
7 Click Yes.
The instrument goes to analysis mode and starts the hardware setting
automatically.
If you click No, even if the plasma is ignited and the instrument goes to
analysis mode, nothing is done.
If you use a nebulizer other than standard nebulizers, select No. Then after
NOTE plasma ignition, do a custom tune in each batch to adjust the items.
8 Click Acquisition Queue from the Queue group in the Task Navigator.
The Acquisition Queue pane appears and displays the progress of the
hardware setting.
When the plasma is ignited, each item is executed after waiting for the warm-up
NOTE time specified in advance. In this case, the remaining warm-up time value is
displayed on the status bar. If you want to skip the warm-up time, select "Skip
Warm-up" on the tool bar.
The Instrument Status Indicator, the Status Viewer dialog box and the Instrument
Status pane in the ICP-MS MassHunter window gives a real-time display that lets
you check the current status of the instrument.
The Instrument Status Indicator uses a color bar to indicate the status of the
instrument. It also indicates error messages.
If the Instrument Status Indicator is not displayed, click Instrument Status Indicator
NOTE from the Show group on the View tab.
If the Status Viewer dialog box is not displayed, click Status Viewer from the Show
NOTE group on the View tab.
To display the Instrument Status pane, select Panes > Instrument Status from the
NOTE Show group on the View tab.
The Instrument Status pane can display the values of five meters at the same
time. To change which meters are displayed in the Instrument Status pane, do the
following steps:
