Fundamentals of Mechanical Vibration – Tutorial Questions 1

Tutorial 2
One Degree-Of-Freedom Systems

Question to work on before the tutorial session. Your solutions will be discussed at the tutorial.

Question 1 L1
B

Beam - 1

Rope - 2 L2

A 25 kg mass is suspended from a rope that has stiffness 2 kN/m,

which in turn is suspended at its upper end from a thin cantilevered
steel (E=205 GPa) beam with thickness 15 mm and width 30 mm. A
L1 is 250 mm. Determine the natural frequency of vertical motion
Load, m
of the mass.
[Thinking Level: Quite easy.] Ans: 1.42 Hz

Question 2 m = 30 kg

A heavy table is supported by

legs made from “flat bar”
T = 0.4 s T = 0.5 s
material, which together act
as a spring for horizontal
motion. Its natural period in
horizontal motion is 0.4 sec. When a 30 kg plate is clamped to its surface, the natural period is
increased to 0.5 sec. What is the effective spring stiffness and the mass of the table?
[Thinking Level: Moderate. ] Ans: k = 13.2 kN/m, m = 53.3 kg

Question 3
k
Estimate the natural frequency of the system
shown when the amplitude of the motion is a
small. Neglect the mass of the bell crank.
m
[Thinking Level: Moderate.]
1 a k
Ans: f N =
2π b m b

Question 4

Determine the natural frequency of the spring-mass-pulley system shown. The k

spring stiffness is k, and assume the pulley to be frictionless and of negligible
mass and the rope is inextensible.

1 k m
[Thinking Level: Moderate.] Ans: f N =
4π m x
