Introduction to Windows 10 (OS)
Windows 10 is a personal computer operating system released by Microsoft.
An operating system is a program that acts as an interface between the
software and the computer hardware. It is an integrated set of specialized
programs that are used to manage overall resources and operations of the
computer. It is specialized software that controls and monitors the execution of
all other programs that reside in the computer, including application programs
and other system software.

Introduction to Windows 10 IoT Core (Internet of Things)
Windows 10 IoT Core is a new edition for Windows targeted towards small, embedded devices that may
or may not have screens. For devices with screens, Windows 10 IoT Core does not have a Windows shell
experience; instead you can write a Universal Windows app that is the interface and “personality” for
your device. IoT core designed to have a low barrier to entry and make it easy to build professional grade
devices. It’s designed to work with a variety of open source languages and works well with Visual Studio.
Starting the Computer
Find the ‘ON’ button, it probably looks like this (but might be square or oblong!)

Lock Screen, Login Screen and Home Screen
Lock Screen a user interface element that regulate immediate access to a device. Clicking on this (Lock
Screen) image with a mouse or using the up arrow key will get you to the actual login screen. Once you
type in your password, you can get to the home screen (Desktop).

The desktop is the main screen area that you see after you turn on your computer and log on to Windows.

Creating New Desktop (Task View)
Task View is a great new feature in Windows 10 that allows you to create multiple desktops on the same
Windows PC.
Windows Key + Ctrl + D – Create a new desktop and switch to it
Windows Key + Ctrl + F4 – Close the current desktop.
Windows Key + Ctrl + Left / Right – Switch to the desktop on the left or right.
Arranging Desktop Icons
To arrange icons by name, type, date, or size, right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then
click Arrange Icons
Getting Familiar with Start Menu
The Microsoft Windows Start Menu is the primary location
in Windows to locate your installed programs and find any
files or folders. By default, the Start menu is accessed by
clicking the Start button, located in the bottom left-hand
corner of the Windows Desktop screen.
User Name (The Current login account name)
Most Used Apps (list of the applications mostly used by
user)
Recent Files (list of the files which recently used)
Tiles (the start menu right side tiled apps or folders)
Tile Group Name (name of the tiles)

Customizing Taskbar
There are many ways to customize the taskbar
You can move the entire taskbar to the left, right, or top edge of the screen.
You can make the taskbar larger
Windows automatically hide it when you're not using it,
And add toolbars to it.

Customizing the Start Menu
Windows 10 finally gives us back the Start Menu, and it’s much more customizable than it ever has been
before. Here is a quick rundown of all the different ways that you can customize it.
Resizing Start Menu
You can quickly resize the Start Menu by simply moving your mouse to the top edge of the Start Menu
and resizing down.
Pin and Unpin Tiles
You can easily pin and unpin tiles by right-clicking on each one and selecting Pin/Unpin from Start (you
can also drag them around to rearrange them).
Resize Live Tiles
You can change the size of the tiles by right-clicking on them and choosing Resize and then picking a size.
Turn Off Live Tile Updates
If all those blinking tiles end up annoying you, just right-click on them and choose “Turn live tile off.”
Change Start Menu (and Taskbar) Color
You can easily change the color of your Start Menu and Taskbar by right-clicking any empty space and
choosing Personalize.
Other Start Menu Option
You can choose to show more tiles or folders on the Start menu.
Remove All Live Tiles and Make It Look Like Windows 7
One of the best ways to customize the new Start Menu is to just remove all of the silly live tiles and make
it look more like Windows 7.

This new Windows 10 Settings is a hub for your device's basic settings,
including basic setup, network settings, and privacy settings.

Personalization: Windows 10 includes bunch of new personalization settings that let you change your
desktop background, windows colors, lock screen background, and more.
Background: Is used to change desktop background picture.
Lock screen: Is used to change Lock Screen Picture.
Themes: It is used to change Theme, sound, Desktop Icon and Mouse pointer settings.
Display (Resolution)
To change the Resolution of your screen use display feature from the system settings.
System Properties (Display)
To find the system properties use About form the system settings.
Time and Language
The Time & language tab in the new Windows 10 Settings is where you go to change the time, date, and
add languages

Introduction to Files and Folder
File: A file is an object on a computer that stores data and information.
Folder: A folder is a storage space that many files can be placed in, to group and organize them
together.
Creating Folder and File
To create a new Folder/File right click, go to New and Click on Folder/File Icon or you can create files
using specific applications
Renaming Folder and File
To rename a File/Folder using one of the followings
Right Click on the File/Folder then Click Rename
Select the File/Folder then Press F2
Selecting Files and Folders
Use Mouse to select a File/Folder. Press Shift and Click Mouse to Select multi files/Folders. Press Ctrl and
Click Mouse to Select multi files/Folders from deferent areas of the window.
Copy, Cut, Paste and Delete Files and Folders
To copy a File/Folder to another location Right Click on the object and then Click Copy. (Ctrl+C)
To move a File/Folder to another location Right Click on the object and then Click Cut. (Ctrl+X)

To Paste the Cut/Copied Files/Folders Right Click and then Click Paste. (Ctrl+V)
To delete a file or folder, Right Click on the object and then Click Delete. And you can select the
object then Press delete button from the Keyboard.
Use Shift + Del to delete an object permanently from the computer.
Drag and Drop
Moving a File/Folder by mouse is called Drag and Drop.

Multitasking, in an operating system, is allowing a user to perform more than one computer task at a
time.

Minimize, Maximize, Restore and Close Buttons
The Minimize button: Clicking on the Minimize Button places the window on the taskbar, usually
found at the bottom of the screen.
The Maximize / Restore button: is in the middle and has two states. When a window is “Full Size”,
you can make it smaller. When the window is small, you can maximize it to full size.
The Close button: Clicking the Close button will close the window or program.
Using Mouse with Title bar and Window Logo Key + Arrow Keys
By using mouse, you can snap open windows to the left and right sides of the screen. Minimize, restore
down, and maximize the open windows.
Windows Key + Left – Snap current window to the left side of the screen.
Windows Key + Right – Snap current window the right side of the screen.
Windows Key + Up – Maximize the open window.
Windows Key + Down – Restore down the current window from screen or minimize the desktop
window.

Navigate Using the Address Bar
The address bar appears at the top of every folder window and displays your current location as
a series of links separated by arrows.
The series of links which separated by arrows is used to navigate the visited locations.
And you can click the Back button and the Forward button to navigate through locations you've
already visited as well as Recent Locations and Up to.

Using Shortcuts to Files and Folders
A shortcut is a link to an item (such as a file, folder, drive, or program) on your computer. You can create
shortcuts and then place them in a convenient location so that you can easily access the item that the
shortcut links to. Shortcuts can be distinguished from the original file by the arrow that appears on the
icon.

Compress Folders
Folders are compressed using the Compressed (zipped) Folders feature. use less drive space and can be
transferred to other computers more quickly.
File Attributes
A file attribute is a specific condition in which a file or directory can exist. Attributes can be toggled on
and off for both files and folders, but the consequences of doing so differ a bit between the two.
When a file attribute like the hidden attribute is toggled on for a file, that single file will be hidden -
nothing else.
If the same hidden attribute is applied to a folder, you're given more options than to just hide the folder:
you have the option to apply the hidden attribute to the folder alone or to the folder, its subfolders, and
all of its files.

About File Explorer
File Explorer, previously known as
Windows Explorer, is a file manager
application that provides a graphical
user interface for accessing
the file systems.
Quick Access Toolbar (Customize)
The Quick Access Toolbar is a customizable toolbar that contains a set of commands that are
independent of the tab that is currently displayed. You can move the Quick Access Toolbar from one of
the two possible locations, and you can add buttons that represent commands to the Quick Access
Toolbar.
File
File menu is a list of commands or choices offered to the user, in file explorer you can access to open new
window, CMD, power shell, options, help, close and frequent places.
Home
The Home ribbon isn’t all that useful, if only because the functions inside it are all available as standard
clicks or well-known keyboard shortcuts, like copy and paste.
Share
We never had a Share tab in file explorer in previous versions of Windows. Here you can share any of
your files or folder with others. Just select any file you want to share and click on the Share icon on the
top left corner of your File Explorer. You can also zip the files or burn them into disc from using this new
feature.
View
This View tab in your Windows 10 File Explorer allows you to access the files and folder in a way you
want, may it be a tiled view, view with details, small icons, medium icons and much more.

The Recycle Bin is used to store deleted items. It temporarily
stores files and folders before they are permanently deleted.
Empty Recycle Bin
Delete all items in the Recycle Bin to free up disk space
Recycle Bin Properties
Change the available space for the Recycle Bin and turn confirmation on or off

Using Voice Recorder
Sound Recorder lets you record and save your voice as an audio file on your computer.
Using Sticky Note
Sticky Notes are great for jotting down some quick text you need to remember; like
an address you receive over the phone or any necessary to do list.
Using WordPad
WordPad is a Microsoft Windows program that you can use to create documents such as letters, notes
and posters. It's less complicated than a full word processor but still lets you perform a range of tasks:
create, open, and save documents.

Using Paint
Paint is a feature in Windows that you can use to draw, color, and edit pictures. You can use Paint like a
digital sketchpad to make simple pictures, creative projects, or to add text and designs to other pictures.
To draw any object and edit any kinds of image use the following tools
Clipboard (Cut, Copy and Paste)
Image (Select, Crop, Resize and Rotate)
Shapes and Brushes (Draw with different
kinds of brushes)
Tools (write, draw and paint)
Colors (you can color the objects)

Using Video and Audio Discs
A videodisc is a digital recording (e.g. video or audio) on an optical disk that can
be played on a computer.
Ripping Audio Discs
You can use Windows Media Player to copy songs from
audio CDs to your computer. This process is called ripping.
During the ripping process, the Player makes a copy of each
song, stores it on your hard disk.
Volume Control
A feature on audio equipment for adjusting the sound level.
Using Flash Disk
Insert the Flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
Click My Computer.
You should see an icon for the Flash drive in the My Computer window.
Installing and Uninstalling Software (PDF Reader or VLC Media Player)
In computer terminology, installation usually refers to the process of putting software on a computer.

change the user account picture, add new Microsoft Account, and add work/school account.

Windows Store is an app store for Microsoft Windows,
it is the primary means of distributing Metro-style apps,
although traditional desktop apps can also be listed on
it. Metro-style apps, officially known as Windows
Store apps, is a class of mobile apps distributed via
Windows Store for Microsoft Windows. These apps are
unlike traditional Windows desktop software in terms
of design, development, distribution and contents. Both
free and paid apps can be distributed through Windows
Store, with paid apps ranging in cost from US$0.99 to
$999.99.

Home: Shows the apps, games, music and movies.
Apps: Shows the applications, so you can choose to buy or freely download and install
Games: Shows the games, so you can choose to buy, freely download and install.

Movies & TV: Shows the movies, so you can choose to buy, play trailer online, freely download.

Backing Up and Restoring
Backup is the activity of copying files or databases so that they will be preserved in case of equipment
failure or other catastrophe. Backup is usually a routine part of the operation of large businesses
with mainframes as well as the administrators of smaller business computers. For personal computer
users, backup is also necessary but often neglected. The retrieval of files you backed up is
called restoring them.
Setting up a full image backup
The image backup feature in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 includes a bit-by-bit copy of the entire
system.
This backup contains the full installation of the operating system, settings, desktop programs,
Windows apps, and all your personal files.

Setting up a backup with the file history tool
This feature is more limited, and it only backs up files located in your user account’s libraries.
Recovering lost files using a file history backup
You can bring back the lost files, by using file history backup.
Setting Restore Point
A restore point is a representation of a stored state of your computer's system files. You can use a restore
point to restore your computer's system files to an earlier point in time.
Search for Create a restore point from the taskbar and select it from the list of results.
On the System Protection tab in System Properties, select Create.

Sharing Folder
Sharing is the accessing or sharing of files by one or more users. File sharing is
performed on computer networks as an easy and quick way to transmit data.
To share a folder right click on that and click properties
Hidden Share
If you have multiple computers on a network and want to share folders between them, but only want it
accessed by people who you’ve given the share name to. The $ symbol after the share name is what
makes the folder hidden on the network.
Connecting to Shared Folder
To connect to the shared folder, open the Network Icon and type the user name with
password then use the shared folder.

Mapping Shared Folder
When you map a network drive, it will show up as a new drive under The PC in File Explorer, so you can
quickly access the shared files you need, just like you would your local hard drive.
Getting Help
To get help in Windows 10, press F1 from the Keyboard or click on question marks which appears with
dialog boxes and open windows.

Using Notepad
Notepad is a basic text editor that you can use to create simple documents. The most common use for
Notepad is to view or edit text (.txt) files, but many users find Notepad a simple tool for creating Web
pages.
File menu is used to save or print the file.
Edit menu is used to copy, cut or paste the text.
Format menu is used to change the font, font size or font style.
View menu is used to show or hide the status bar.
Help menu is used to get help.

BitLocker
BitLocker is a computer hard drive encryption and
security program. It is a drive security and encryption
program that protects drive content and data from any
offline attack.
BitLocker to Go
BitLocker To Go is a full-disk encryption protection
technology for removable storage devices that are
connected to one of the USB ports on your computer
Re-lock the Protected Drive
Once you unlocked the BitLocked drive then it remains unlocked until you reboot your computer system.
To relock unlocked drive without restart
1. Open PowerShell
2. Enter the Command (manage-bde –lock X:), while the X is your drive name.
Sometimes this (manage-bde –lock X:) do not work because the drive is in use. You should try this
forcefully lock the drive. (manage-bde lock –forcedismount X:) is the command of relock the drive
forcefully.

.bat File
You might think it is boring to type the given commands on previous slides every time in PowerShell to
lock drives.
For better performance create a file with .bat extension in Notepad
1. Open Notepad
2. Write the (manage-bde –lock –forcedismount X:) command
3. From File menu click on Save As
4. Select save type to All Files
5. Then in name field type file name and add .bat and the end of file name
6. Save the file
Note: whenever you want to run this command then right click on file and select Run as Administrator.

Photos application is used to view or edit photos and videos. The Photos app includes a wide range of
editing options to enhance your photos, from automatic fixes to advanced adjustments. To edit a picture,

Changing Screen Saver
Screen Saver is a computer program that blanks the
screen or fills it with moving images or patterns when the
computer is not in use. Initially designed to prevent
phosphor burn-in on CRT and plasma computer monitors,
screensavers are now used primarily for entertainment,
security or to display system status information.
Adding Printer
Before printing a file add the printer to your computer.
Printing a File
To print any file menu, refer to the Print Option, which is located to the File Menu of that file or simply
press Ctrl+P.
