ROLLER COASTER DIY GUIDELINES
Objective:
Design and build a functional roller coaster using basic materials to demonstrate principles of physics such as energy, force, and
motion.
Materials:
Students can use materials such as cardboard, straws, paper, tape, glue, string, marbles, and other simple items.
Recycled materials are encouraged to promote sustainability.
No pre-made kits allowed; everything must be created from scratch.
Structure Requirements:
The roller coaster must include at least one loop, one hill, and one turn.
The design must allow a marble (or similar small ball) to travel from the start to the finish without being pushed once released.
The starting height must be no more than 50 cm above the base.
Theme:
Students may choose a theme (e.g., space, jungle, futuristic) and design the roller coaster based on that theme. Creativity in
theme execution is encouraged.
Time Limit:
Students will have 3 hours to complete their roller coaster during the class period.
Safety:
Ensure all cutting and construction are done safely. Use scissors and glue carefully under supervision.

Roller Coaster DIY Criteria Comments/Suggestions and Points
Design and Functionality (40%)
The marble completes the track without stopping or needing external
force.
Includes at least one loop, one hill, and one turn.
The roller coaster holds together and remains upright during testing.
Unique features or creative twists added to the roller coaster.
Physics Understanding (30%)
Demonstrates an understanding of potential and kinetic energy (e.g.,
how height affects speed).
Incorporates and explains forces like gravity, friction, and centripetal
force.
The group can explain why they made specific design decisions
based on physics principles.
Creativity and Aesthetics (20%)
Successfully integrates the chosen theme into the design.
The roller coaster is visually attractive, colorful, and well-decorated.
Teamwork and Presentation (10%)
All members contributed to the design and construction.
The group presents their roller coaster, explaining how it works and
the physics behind it.
