Ocean Exploration Technologies Explained

Seventy-five percent of the Earth is covered by oceans, yet only 5% has been explored, with better maps of the Moon than our oceans. Key inventions like the Aqua Lung, Jim Suit, and Deepsea Challenger have significantly advanced underwater exploration, leading to remarkable discoveries of unique sea life. Despite these advancements, many mysteries of the ocean remain, prompting ongoing exploration and technological development.

Exploring The Depths

Seventy-five percent of our planet is covered by oceans. Yet, we only have

explored 5% of it. We have better maps of the Moon than we do of our oceans. But
yet, we have managed to find the most amazing discoveries. We have found sea life
like tubeworms, the fangtooth fish, the viperfish, and the anglerfish. We have
found all this thanks to inventions like, The Aqua Lung, The Jim Suit, and the
Deepsea Challenger. These inventions have given mankind new amazing discoveries
and our ability to traverse the deepest darkest depths of our mysterious oceans.

The Aqua Lung

The Aqua Lung was the first technology that granted us the ability to explore the
ocean. This amazing invention was created by ocean explorer Jacques Coustuea in the
1940s. It functioned as an oxygen tank that strapped to the back of a diver and
controlled the flow of oxygen. Over time, advancements of the Aqua Lung shaped it
into what we know today as the SCUBA, or the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.
Thanks to this amazing invention, it has given us more knowledge of our oceans. If
it wasn't for this genius technological device, ocean exploration would never come
to be what it is today.

The Jim Suit

The next huge advancement in underwater exploration took place in 1979. The Jim
suit was invented and allowed divers to traverse the ocean deeper for longer
periods of time. The Jim suit's main function and design was inspired by an
astronaut suit. It allowed the diver to breathe- More efficiently and protected the
diver from lethal water pressure. When it was tested, scientist Slyvia Earle was
underwater for two hours and 1,250feet underwater. This remarkable technological
device has led scientists to new discoveries and has advanced underwater
exploration technology.

The Deepsea Challenger

A new ocean exploration technology was invented in 2012. It was an underwater
submersible made by filmmaker James Cameron called the Deepsea Challenger. The
Deepsea Challenger was an ocean submarine that is designed to descend vertically
like a torpedo. This makes it faster and more aerodynamic. Instead of a steel
shell, it is replaced with a lightweight foam. This allows the Deepsea Challenger
to rise quickly from the bottom. Before, early submarines could only travel four
miles down the ocean. The Deepsea Challenger broke that record by descending seven
miles down. The Deepsea Challenger has lights ,3D cameras, and a scooper arm to
collect ocean samples. This genius device will continue to lead us to amazing
discoveries in the future.

Thanks to the development of revolutionary ocean exploration

technologies such as the Aqua Lung, the Jim Suit, and the Deepsea Challenger, it
has made it possible to traverse the depths of our oceans and find new sea
life, discoveries, and information. But we still have many questions of what lives
beneath the surface. However, we will continue to advance our ocean technologies,
and we will find the answers to the millions of questions we have about our oceans.
But only time will tell.
