ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Question 1: (20 Marks)

4 1
(a) Simplify ln 2x4 − ln 3
+ ln 64.
x 3
(b) Prove that n2 > 3n for n ≥ 4, with n ∈ Z.

(c) How many people must be in a room to guarantee that 2 people have last names that
begin with the same initial? You must clearly explain your reasoning.

(d) Determine the number of distinct permutations that can be made from the letters in the
word STATISTICS?

[4 + 10 + 3 + 3 = 20 marks]

Question 2: (25 Marks)

dy
(a) If y = et + t and x = t2 + 1, find .
dx
√ dy
(b) If y = ( 1 + t2 ) sin2 t, find using logarithmic differentiation.
dx
(c) Consider the integral ∫ 2
In = xn ex dx.
0

Use integration by parts to evaluate I1 . Hence, evaluate In for n = 4. [Hint: use a

reduction formula]

(d) Evaluate ∫ ∞
2 1
− dt.
3 2t + 1 t

[3 + 4 + 15 + 3 = 25 marks]

Question 3: (25 Marks)
(a) Obtain the Maclaurin series for y(x) = cos x.

(b) Using a generating function, solve ak = 3ak−1 , for k = 1, 2, 3, . . ., with initial condition
a0 = 2.

(c) If a = 5î + ĵ − 2k̂ and b = 3î + ĵ + k̂, find the angle between vectors a and b.

(d) Find the vector product of a = 2î + 4ĵ + 5k̂ and b = î + 3ĵ + k̂.

[6 + 9 + 4 + 6 = 25 marks]

Question 4: (30 Marks)

(a) Perform the first two iterations of the Jacobi method for solving the following linear
system using x(0) = 0:

10x1 − x2 + 2x3 = 6
−x1 + 11x2 − x3 + 3x4 = 25
2x1 − x2 + 10x3 − x4 = −11
3x2 − x3 + 8x4 = 15

(b) Consider the function f (p) = cos p − p = 0. Using Newton’s method, approximate a root
π
of f to 6 decimal places with the initial approximation p0 = .
4
(c) Use the numbers x0 = 2, x1 = 2.75, and x2 = 4 to find the second Lagrange interpolating
1
polynomial for f (x) = . Hence, use the second Lagrange interpolating polynomial to
x
approximate f (3).

(d) Compare the Trapezoidal rule and Simpson’s rule approximations to

∫ 2
x4 dx.
0

[6 + 7 + 11 + 6 = 30 marks]
