for that job, not just because they are here that morning. She considers their health for the work and any specific requests of the employer, for example, a woman who is more comfortable with a female housekeeper. Michael appreciates the part-time work because it not only supplements his income, but he likes being involved with people, good people. In addition to light yard work, he has served as a caregiver for a stroke victim so the mans wife could run errands, knowing Michael was there to sit with her husband and to look after his daily needs. Cathy Cripe likes sending Mr. McKay for jobs because he is a gentle person and a good representative of the Senior Center. Michael serves on the Senior Centers Board and participates in exercise and yoga classes. I didnt know how to use a computer, he tells me, But Cathy helped me set up my email so I could apply to the city for the 55 and older programs. Once a lady called for work to be done at her house. Michael arrived to find nine cats weaving in and out of the home. Three cats had died. The woman wanted Michael to dig a big hole, a precise 4 x 6 foot grave. It was a hard job. Im not sure if the city has rules about this sort of thing. But I got paid ten dollars an

Cathy stays in contact with local businesses in need of dishwashers, maintenance workers and security guards. She answers the phone when a homeowner seeks help with weeding, gutter cleaning and pruning, carpentry, electronics, plumbing or housecleaning in anticipation of a move. Of course for $10 an hour, the fee for all jobs, we cannot provide licensed and bonded employees. Nonetheless, Cathy is impressed with the qualifications she finds on interviewing each applicant: college degrees, skilled craftspeople. year career in wholesale jewelry sales as a gemologist. But now at sixty-five, he has come to the Senior Center where a friend told him he would find new friends, healthy exercise, a nourishing lunch and perhaps part-time employment. Michael found a valued friend in Cathy Cripe, the Centers Employment and Social Services Director. She is a conduit for center members aged 55 and over, connecting them with short term employment that

Coincidently, while I was interviewing for this article, representatives from Key Bank arrived at the Senior Center with a check to support the senior employment program. Readers may add their support by contributing bus passes, or calling the Center when they could use reliable part-time help.

On Labor Day 2010, especially for seniors, employment opportunities are rare, bringing to mind the anthem of the Great Depression, Brother Can You Spare a Dime. Most of the lyrics are not a plea for a handout, but a paean to years of productive employment. Every year, Pike Market Medical Clinic provides care to thousands of homeless and formerly homeless adults in shelters, transitional housing, and in the Clinic itself.

You can help support patient care by joining us on October 5th for the Clinics 27th Annual Feast at the Market, an annual progressive dinner through the Pike Place Market where guests enjoy a selfguided tour of tastes at 20 participating restaurants. Set your own pace, dining at the restaurants of your choice in the order you choose. Youll be seated at each & served a delicious, small dish prepared especially for the occasion. You may not make it to every restaurant but youll have a great time trying.

The 24th annual Great Figgy Pudding Street Corner Caroling Competition celebrates the beginning of the holiday season with 40 caroling teams singing their hearts out to raise money for the Pike Market Senior Center and Downtown Food Bank. Downtown Pine Street closes to traffic every first Friday of December at 6pm so that groups of singers from all over the City can line the sidewalks and compete to win the award for Best Choral Group, Most Imaginative Team, and Peoples Choice.

Once again, the Seattle Hotel Association has selected the Market Foundation as the beneficiary of their 14th Annual Gala and Auction, Evening of Hope. We are excited to announce that this years Honoree will be Howard Schultz. The Market Foundation will receive proceeds from ticket sales, raise the paddle bidding, and auction purchases. Auction items include fabulous vacations and getaways, dining opportunities, and gift items galore. Ticket and sponsorship information is available by calling (206) 236-6167.

You can help ensure that these programs are completely funded this year by bringing your family, friends, and workplace team, to Neighborcare Healths 15th Annual Pumpkin Push 5K Run & Family Walk on October 30th in Seward Park.
