By Marlys Erickson Executive Director, Market Foundation

he Market Foundation is proud to be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2007. Our board had its first meeting on August 17, 1982 on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Markets. We are the Markets community fund and our primary mission is the same as it was in 82 to support the Markets services for lowincome people. Along the way weve added heritage, farmer, and capital programs to our list. This year - during the Markets Centennial year - we celebrate the fact that weve contributed $8,149,530 to the Markets Clinic, Preschool, Senior Center and Food Bank and $4,008,622 to its heritage, farm and capital programs. We also celebrate you - the volunteers, donors and events that got us this far. Thank you all.

Who is Rachel? Rachel is the Markets bronze piggybank, and shes been bringing home the bacon for the Market Foundation for the past 21 years more than $120,000 to be exact. Shes helped provide services for low-income folks living and working in the Market or downtown Seattle. Legend has it that if you rub her nose and make a donation, youll have good luck. Being this is the Chinese Year of the Golden Pig which comes only once every 60 years, you can expect extra powerful blessings. Thoinks! Why Pigs? In 1971, the successful Keep the Market campaign saved the Market from the wrecking ball. The citizens of Seattle voted to preserve the Market and also to maintain the social services that were essential to low-income people. Thats where the Market Foundation came in to raise the funds for a Clinic, Senior Center, Preschool and Food Bank. Someone realized that a piggy bank would sure help so Georgia Gerber, a sculptor, designed Rachel. All those pigs on the streets of Seattle are Rachels cousins and shes real proud to have them in town visiting! 100 Pigs, dressed up and cavorting through downtown will kick off the Centennial Street Festival, and a weekend long extravaganza of fun!
