WHAT IS ORAL
TRADITIONS?
Oral Tradition is the cultural knowledge and
information that has been passed down through speech
from our generation to the next. Oral Tradition refers
to the practice of passing down knowledge, stories,
history, and cultural values through spoken word,
typically from one generation to the next, without
relying on written texts.

The Oral Traditions and expressions
domain encompasses an enormous
variety of spoken forms including
proverbs, riddles, tales, nursery
rhymes, legends, myths, epic songs
and poems, charms, prayers, chants,
songs, dramatic performances and
more. Oral Traditions and expressions
are use to pass on knowledge, cultural
and social values and collective
memory. They play a crucial part in
keeping cultures alive. 3
PROVERB
A proverb (from Latin: proverbium) or an adage is a simple,
traditional saying that expresses a perceived truth based on
common sense or experience.

Riddle, deliberately enigmatic or ambiguous question requiring a

that has been a part of the folkfare of most cultures from ancient times.
It is a sort poem that works like a puzzle. It describes something and you

A riddle is also a statement, question or phrase having a double or veiled
3 meaning, put forth as a puzzle to be solved.
