Assessment in Learning 2
Analysis
The research article “Teachers’ Talk and Students’ Attitude in Learning English at
Secondary Schools in Indonesia: A Correlational Analysis” focuses on the correlation
between teachers’ and students’ in learning English. The study emphasizes the
importance of teachers’ talk in learning a language. The study suggests that a positive
correlation or relationship of a teacher to a student would affect his/her attitude
towards learning. A good relationship will give a good motivation. A positive and
effective communication from teachers can contribute a positive attitude to students
especially in enhancing their English or language learning experience. In the article,
Kara (33) stated that attitudes toward learning besides opinions and beliefs have an
obvious influence on students’ behaviors and consequently on their performance. This
means that the students who have positive attitude toward language learning have
tendency to obtain satisfied language performance. The research findings suggest that
the teacher’s way to communicate and interact with students significantly impacts their
attitudes in language learning.
There is also an article that corroborate and refute the findings. The article “Factors
affecting the attitudes of students towards learning English as a foreign language”
highlights the factors that affects students’ attitude toward learning a foreign language.
Just like the first article, it also acknowledges the close relationship between attitude
and motivation. Teachers’ should know how to behave and communicate with their
students before, during, and after the discussion. A teacher who knows how to talk
would greatly affect their relationship with his/her students resulting to bond, to a
motivation, that will greatly affect their attitudes towards learning. These article
supports the idea of a teacher-student interaction and teachers’ attitude will
significantly affect the students’ attitude and learning outcomes.
An article “The impact of teacher attitude and teaching approaches on student
demotivation: Disappointment as a mediator” does not necessarily refute the first
article I stated above but this article or research discusses the relationship of a
teachers’ discouraging attitude and student demotivation. The demotivation will lead
to student’s unwillingness to learn English as a second language. The article highlight
that the negative attitude of a teacher will lead to student demotivation in learning. In
conclusion, all of the article suggests to have a good relationship between students
and teachers because it affects the way the teachers teach and the way the students
learn.
