HOW CAN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF BANGSAMORO AUTONOMOUS REGION IN
MUSLIM MINDANAO (BARMM) AFFECTS OUR PURSUIT OF NATION BUILDING?
The creation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in 2019
through the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) is a significant development in the Philippines’
efforts to address the long-stand war in Mindanao. The BARMM was established in 2019 to
change the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) due to its weak governance,
which slowed down the process and development. The BARMM is a part of the Philippines and
has its government and laws, that provides a greater control to its own region. Its main goal is to
enhance the position of the Bangsamoro people and address the issues in Mindanao. It is crucial
to understand BARMM as it affects the nation-building process and it is the key to resolving
conflicts through negotiation and self-governance. The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in
Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) positively impacts Philippine nation-building by promoting
lasting peace in Mindanao, and, in addition, by enhancing sustainable development and inclusive
governance for long-term national stability.
Some argued that BARMM may weaken the unity of the nation and may encourage other regions
to seek self-governance. They are also concerned that other regions will ask for autonomy
because of self-governance and may lead to the fragmentation of the nation. Additionally,
BARMM has a problem with a cramped living condition and a poorly developed healthcare
system. Also, people worried that due to lack of resources, BARMM may not be able to manage
properly, which may result in poor governance and corruption, leading to a poor nation.
While these worries are reasonable and valid, they fail to consider the advantages that BARMM
can bring to the pursuit of nation-building. The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim
Mindanao (BARMM) can be a great positive factor in the pursuit of nation-building in the
Philippines. First, the BARMM’s focus on peace and security will help in the formation of a
stable society. By maintaining agreements for peace and avoiding conflicts, the region will
develop unity and will become a whole country with peace and security. Moreover, the
enhanced education and skills training in BARMM will ensure that its citizens are well-equipped
to utilize the many opportunities available to them and therefore benefit the nation and produce a
better workforce. At last, the inclusive and transparent governance of BARMM can enhance
democracy. By ensuring equal leadership and involvement in community decision-making, the
region will promote solidarity, stability, and public trust.
Therefore, the establishment of BARMM is significant in the pursuit of Philippine nation-
building. It is an institution that gives the Bangsamoro people the opportunity to govern
themselves while remaining united in Philippine society. Furthermore, it appreciates and values
the rich culture of the Bangsamoro people which in turn enhances the unity and stability of the
nation. For BARMM to sustain its success, the Philippine government must continue to support
it by offering training programs, equitable resource allocation, and an open-door government. It
is important to note that BARMM should be seen as partners in building a more stable nation
rather than as a source of threat.
