Math Portfolio

The document outlines two portfolio assignments focused on mathematical concepts: quadratic equations and similarity. The first assignment involves exploring real-life applications of quadratic equations, while the second focuses on scaling images using the concept of similarity. Both tasks require visual aids and have specific submission guidelines and deadlines.

Portfolio Work: Quadratic Equations in Real Life

Overview
Quadratic equations are an important part of mathematics and have many practical uses in everyday life.
This assignment will help you discover how these equations are applied in real-world situations, making
math more relevant and interesting.
Objectives
• Understand the basic form and properties of quadratic equations.
• Explore real-life situations where quadratic equations are used.
• Present your findings in a clear and creative way.

Details of Task
1. Choose any three real-life situation where quadratic equations are used
2. For your chosen situation:
o Describe the scenario in your own words.
o Create a visual aid (like a picture, graph, diagram, or drawing) to help explain your example.

Guidelines
• Format: Neatly handwritten in A4 sheets (only).
• Visual Aids: Include at least one visual aid per example that helps explain your choice.
• Submission: Submit your work by 20.08.2024 in class.

Suggested Structure
1. Introduction
o Briefly explain what a quadratic equation is.
2. Real-Life Application
o Describe the scenario with visuals.
3. Conclusion
o Reflect on how quadratic equations are part of real-life scenarios.
4. Visual Aid
o Attach your graph, diagram, or drawing with labels.

Portfolio Work: Scaling Up with Similarity

Overview
In this assignment, you will explore how the concept of similarity can be used to scale up an object or image.
Similar figures maintain their shape but change in size, and you’ll learn how to apply this principle to enlarge
a simple shape or image while keeping its proportions intact.
Objectives
• Understand the concept of similarity and how it applies to scaling.
• Apply similarity to scale up a simple shape or image.
• Demonstrate how to calculate the dimensions of the scaled-up figure.

Assignment Details Task

1. Choose a simple drawing, image or a basic design.
2. Measure the original dimensions of your chosen image.
3. Decide on a scale factor (e.g., 2x, 3x) to enlarge your shape or image.
4. Calculate the new dimensions using the scale factor. Remember that all corresponding sides should
increase by the same factor to keep the shape similar.
5. Draw the scaled-up version of your image, either by hand or using graph paper.
6. Compare the original and scaled-up versions to ensure the proportions have been maintained.

Report Guidelines
• Format: Neatly handwritten on A4 sheets.
• Visual Aids: Include the original and scaled-up versions of the image, with labelled dimensions.
• Submission: Submit your work by 23.08.24 in class.

Suggested Structure
1. Introduction
o Briefly explain what similarity means in geometry.
2. Process
o Describe the original image’s dimensions.
o Explain the scale factor you chose.
3. Scaled-Up Shape or Image
o Draw or present the scaled-up version with all dimensions labelled.
4. Conclusion
o Reflect on how the shape or image changed and why maintaining proportions is important.
