Directions (7-16): Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions
given below it. Certain words are given in bold to help you locate them while
answering some of the questions.
Tokyo has lodged a protest with Beijing after a PLA aircraft carrier took a
new route to the Pacific Ocean that brought it close to its outlying islands as well
as the island of Taiwan. China’s Liaoning carrier and two type 052D guided-
missile destroyers sailed from the East China Sea into Japan’s contiguous zones
passing between the islands of Yonaguni and Iriomote on Tuesday and Wednesday,
according to the Japanese defence ministry. The two islands are Japan’s
southwestern most isles. Yonaguni is 110km (68 miles) from Taiwan’s east coast,
and 150km south of the Diaoyu, or Senkaku islands, the course of a long-running
territorial dispute between China and Japan.
A contiguous zone is the area between 12 to 24 nautical miles (22-44km)
from a country’s coast and where it has limited control over areas such as customs,
immigration and sanitation. However, according to the United Nations Convention
on the Law of the Sea and other international laws, it is generally considered to
1

be international waters where foreign vessels are allowed to pass. “This incident
is totally unacceptable from the perspective of the security environment of Japan
and the region, and we have expressed our serious concerns to the Chinese side
through diplomatic channels,” Japanese government spokesman Hiroshi Moriya
said on Wednesday. The incident happened less than a month after Japan said a
Chinese Y-9 intelligence-gathering aircraft had entered the country’s airspace
off the coast of the Danjo Islands southwest of Kyushu. The Taiwanese military
also posted on Wednesday on its official X (formerly Twitter) account that it has
spotted the PLA ships sailing through the waters northeast of Taiwan and
continuing towards the southeast of Yonaguni Island.

r’s
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said in a regular press
conference in Beijing that the passage by Liaoning and its accompanying warships
was “in line with China’s domestic and international laws”. Previously, Chinese
naval vessels travelling between the East China Sea and the West Pacific would
make their journeys through the less controversial international waterway of
ha
Miyako Strait between Japan’s Okinawa Island and Miyako Island, which is about
250 km (217 nautical miles) wide and farther east from Taiwan. Beijing sees
Taiwan as part of China that must be reunited with the mainland – by force if

necessary. Most countries, including Japan, do not recognise Taiwan as an
independent state. In July the Japanese destroyer Suzutsuki entered Chinese
territorial waters off the eastern province of Zhejiang, triggering an investigation

by the defence ministry in Tokyo.
