LAB 3 DATE: 13th oct, 2022
TITTLE: Ecology
AIM: To identify/ quantify plant species in a grass land ecosystem using a
quadrat.
APPARATUS AND MATERIALS
- Quadrat
PROCEDURE:
1. One group member was chosen to throw the quadrat and one was
chosen to record the results throughout.
2. Partner with quadrat was spun around twice and then threw the
quadrat behind him, over his head and the quadrant fell in a spot
randomly
3. Observations were then made, and recorded
4. Steps 1-3 were repeated 9 more times.
RESULTS
TABLE 3.1- TABLE SHOWING THE SPECIES FOUND IN EACH THROW OF THE
QUADRAT:
THROW # Spe. A Spe. B Spe. C Spe. D Spe. E Bare ground
1 70 % 25% - - - 5%
2 5% 65% 30% - - -
3 20% 30% 10% - - 40%
4 50% 40% 5% 5% - -
5 - 5% - - - 95%
6 55% - 25% - 70% 0%
7 30% 40% - - - 30%
8 - 60% 20% - - 20%
9 - 70% 25% - - 5%
10 - 70% 25% - - 5%
DISCUSSION
Abiotic factors such as: sunlight, rainfall, temperature and moisture affected
the distribution of species. In Quadrat throws 3 and 5, due to the
waterlogged soil, the water reduced the oxygen available to the roots and
caused root rot and death. Because of this, Quadrat throws 3 & 5, were
mostly, bare ground.
The sunlight also had an effect on the distribution of species as well,
because, light intensity influences the manufacture of plant food, stem
length, leaf color and flowering. Plant grown in low light tends to be spindly
with light green leaves. A similar plant grown in very bright light tends to be
shorter, better branches, and have larger, dark green leaves. Therefore,
where sunlight was hitting the field directly, it has more plant (species)
growth.
Being in the wet season, precipitation had a effect on the distribution as well.
Heavy rainfall leads soil water saturation or flooding and related oxygen
depletion, surface flooding, poor nutrient transport and ethylene production
in plants, which restricts growth.
PRECAUTIONS, LIMITITATIONS, SOURCES OF ERROR
- The quadrat was thrown randomly to obtain the most accurate results
- 2 persons assessed the species in the quadrat to obtain accurate
results
CONCLUSION
The identification of plant species in a grass land ecosystem using a quadrat
was successfully done.
REFLECTION
Overall, this was a very enjoyable lab…I enjoyed finding a lab partner and
had a great time going out onto the field and analyzing. What I didn’t enjoy
was the extremely hot sun and how muddy the field was.
In completing this lab, I learnt how to properly use a quadrat and how to
quantify plant species using it.
