CVL724: Linear Programming Crop Model

The document outlines a class assignment for CVL724, focusing on a new pesticide's effectiveness on crop yields for soybeans, wheat, and corn. It provides data on crop yields, production costs, selling prices, and environmental restrictions on pesticide use, requiring the construction of a linear programming model to optimize crop planting and pesticide application. The assignment must be submitted via email with specific formatting instructions.

Problem 1:
A new pesticide has been developed that is effective in controlling corn, soybeans and wheat pests.
As a result of field experiments, the following crop yields have been obtained.
Pesticide application Crop yields (kg/ha)
(kg/ha) Soybeans Wheat Corn
0.0 2700 3500 5400
1.0 3800 4100 5700
.
2.0 4400 2700 7900
Total annual costs of production, not including pesticide application are Rs 25000/ha, Rs 20000/ha
and Rs 30000/ha for soybeans, wheat and corn respectively. Pesticide application costs are Rs
3000/kg/ha/yr for any crop.

Current selling prices for soybeans, wheat and corn are Rs 18/kg, Rs 15/kg and Rs 11/kg respectively.

Environmental authorities have, however, expressed concern over the pesticide’s ecological impacts
and have ruled that a total pesticide applied must not exceed 100 kg.

A farmer has 100 ha that can be planted to soybeans, wheat and corn. Construct a linear
programming (LP) model, which can help in determining how many hectares should be planted to
each crop and what the pesticide application rates should be.
