“IMPACT OF HIGH HEAT INDEX ON STUDENTS AND TEACHER’S ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE: A QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS”
INTRODUCTION
High heat index has been a greatest concern in today’s world. It is a measure of
combination of air temperature and relative humidity that indicates level of discomfort an
average person could feel. Nowadays, in terms of education, environmental factors have
been one of the major concerns that affects the studies and schedules of schools. It is
undeniable that high heat causes too many disadvantages in an individual, as it affects
different functions such as the cognitive function, physical, mood and the overall health
being. Temperature in a classroom set-up is indeed relevant as it helps students and
teachers with their behavior and performance academically. This causes frustrations and
headache as prolonged exposure to heat can affect the behavior and lose focus or become
unmotivated in lectures. As climate change is emerging negatively, this heat index issue is
becoming more important nowadays as this just not affect one’s health but also creates
various changes in an education program. Analyzing the different impacts of high heat
index can delve into deeper understanding as to why this topic is becoming too relevant
to be studied in research.
Some research studies or based on TV reports show that high heat conditions have
an adverse effect on students and teachers as well in an educational setting. For the past
years, there have been cases when a temperature ranges from 40 degrees Celsius and
more, classes are being suspended — causing lectures and schedules to conflict.
Undeniably in this kind of temperature, it is too uncomfortable for students and teachers
to learn and teach. It has become a distraction, creates serious stress feelings, and affects
the overall health of an individual.
For students, this leads them to become distracted, causes laziness to come to
school as too much heat makes them unmotivated to study and when it comes to health,
this also causes sickness. As too much heat could also affect the cognitive behavior of an
individual, students may also lose their concentration, find it too hard to retain
information, and have difficulty understanding the lectures. This leads them to a lowered
academic performance, and it is highly concerning because cognitive function is too
important when it comes to learning. In school settings, it is not just the students who are
affected by this environmental factor, but also the staff and the teachers. Teachers are the
ones responsible for instructing students in different lessons. Some teachers are more
prone and most likely to be affected by this high heat condition because of their ages.
This causes them irritability, less focus, and unmotivated to teach, affecting their health
being and their overall teaching performance in the classroom — and when a teaching
performance happens to be affected, it will also impact a student’s learning academically.
This study seeks to analyze students' academic performance and teaching
performance despite the ranging concerns about heat index. This will also help in
understanding the different experiences and examining their productivity despite being
influenced or exposed to prolonged heat. It will also help in a deeper understanding of the
negative effects on the overall well-being of students and teachers. This study will also
provide various insights into how the high heat index is being too relevant issue
nowadays and how it impacts an educational setting. This will also include providing
necessary measures that could help to give solution in this situation.
The overall data and findings of this study could help in determining what goals
are need to be met as complications and concerns from students and teachers have been
increasing. It could help in implementing different strategies that will help in reforming
school policies, schedules, as well as how classroom setup will be built to mitigate or
lessen the effects of being affected by a high heat index. With these, it can help build and
protect an individual’s health and overall academic performance. This research seeks to
contribute to maintain a quality education despite different environmental factors that
could occur and affect educational programs.
