CHAPTER I
PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the study

Bullying is commonly defined as repeated aggressive behavior in which there is an

imbalance of power and strength between two parties. Bullying behavior may be direct or

overt. Bullying has been documented and studied in countries around the world. Bullying is

not a part of normative development for children and adolescents and should be considered a

precursor to more serious aggressive behavior. It is also clear that bullying can contribute to

our environment of fear and intimidation in schools. Bullying is a widespread problem in

schools and communities. The behavior encompasses physical aggression, threats, teasing,

and harassment. In any form, bullying is unacceptable anti-social behavior that can

undermine the quality of the school environment affect students' academic and social

outcomes, cause victims emotional and psychological trauma, and, in extreme cases, lead to

serious violence. Bullying can threaten students' physical and emotional safety at school and

can negatively impact their ability to learn.

The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. Adults must create an

environment in school and at home where bullying is not tolerated under any circumstances.

Bullying is not an inevitable part of growing up but learned through influences at home, in

school, from peer groups, and through the media. As such, it also can be unlearned or, better

yet, prevented. Every person has the right to be protected against violence and abuse, and

your children are no exception. As parents, you do all that you can to shelter and keep your

children safe from harm. But it is only a matter of time before these children grow, and you

will no longer be able to keep a watchful eye on them all day. Such is the case when they

begin to go to school.

1
It is for this reason that the Anti-Bullying Act has been established by the Philippine

Government. Under this Anti Bullying Act, it states that bullying occurs when one or more of

the following occurs as a result of verbal, physical, or even electronic or online actions by

one or a group of students

Statement of the Problem

This study investigates the perceptions of students regarding school bullying and its

impact on their academic performance. Specifically, it examines the correlation between

students' reported experiences with bullying (as victims, bullies), their perceptions of the

school's response to bullying, and their academic achievements, standardized test scores,

and/or class participation. different forms of school bullying (physical, verbal, cyberbullying)

and academic performance among students. It aims to determine if certain types of bullying

have a more significant negative impact on academic outcomes than others, and whether

these impacts vary across gender, grade level, or other factors.

1. What is the impact of bullying on academic performance of senior high students in

Narra Integrated School?

2. Which type of bullying are common among senior high in Narra Integrated School?

3. What are the experiences of students about bullying in schools

2

The aim of the study was to determine the effects of bullying on students' academic

performance in Narra Integrated School. The first practical implication of the present study is

that the findings provide the necessary empirical information on bullying activities in schools

and their significant impacts on students' performance. Thus, the information allows the

school administration to develop appropriate strategies and measures that would help in

mitigating bullying cases in schools. Also, the information of the present research would

allow the redesigning of school rules and policies that would help students and teachers to

comply with them and refrain from bullying behaviors. Further, the study being explorative

provides in-depth information that offers an opportunity for students and teachers to

understand the consequences of bullying on school and academic performance. The study

provides the opportunity to identify different types of bullying common in schools and

suggest possible strategies that are effective in mitigating them.

Significance of the Study

The main purpose of this research was to examine and explore the effects of bullying

on students' academic performance in among students of Narra Integrated School. The

unprovoked use of power by some students on others and how these experiences shape the

learning or performance of other students is what this study intends to examine. Another

3
purpose of this research was to bring to light the concept of bullying in schools as directed

towards students' academic performance and to ascertain the extent to which bullying affects

students' performance.
