Charles's Law and the Rising Water - Activity
Worksheet
Name: ____________________________ Date: _______________
Objective: To understand Charles's Law and observe its application through the "Rising
Water" experiment.
Materials:
● A clear glass
● A candle
● A small plate
● Water
● Food coloring (optional, to make water easier to see)
● Matches or a lighter
Procedure - to be performed by the teacher/facilitator or students under close
supervision:
1. Place the candle in the center of the plate.
2. Add a small amount of water to the plate, enough to cover the bottom. If using, add a
few drops of food coloring to the water.
3. Light the candle.
4. Carefully place the glass upside down over the candle, ensuring it is completely
submerged in the water.
5. Observe what happens.
Questions:
1. What happens to the flame inside the glass when it's placed over the candle? Why?
2. What happens to the water level inside the glass? Does it rise or fall?
3. Explain what is happening in terms of Charles's Law. What is the gas in this
experiment? How does its temperature change? How does this affect its volume?
4. Initially, the air inside the glass is heated by the candle. How does this affect the
pressure inside the glass? (Hint: Think about the relationship between temperature
and pressure.)
5. After the candle burns out, what happens to the temperature of the air inside the
glass? How does this affect the pressure inside the glass?
Conclusion:
Summarize what you learned about Charles's Law and how it applies to the rising water
experiment. Explain how the changes in temperature affect the volume and pressure of the
gas inside the glass, and how this leads to the water rising.
