Contention (CD) vs Contentionless (CDC-F)
- CD ROADMs
➢ Any color wavelength dropped to any port
➢ Wavelength from any direction dropped to a shared set of drop side modules

- CD ROADM limitations
➢ Can’t drop the same wavelength (ie color) from multiple degrees to the
same set of drop modules
➢ Known as “contention” or “blocking”

- CDC ROADM
➢ Colorless, Directionless, Contentionless
➢ Entirely different type of drop side technology (multicast switch)
➢ Eliminates “contention” issue with CD ROADM

➢ Fibering for adding degrees and adding Add/Drop ports is simplified

➢ Uses MPO connectors (12 fiber) throughout, standardized on Type A cables for simplification.
➢ MPO cable from WR20-TFM to Fiber Shuffle for adding degrees
➢ MPO Cable from fiber shuffle to Amp Array (AAR-8A) for adding Add/Drop Traffic

WR20-TFM Card (Twin 1x20 Flex WSS):

➢ 2 Slot Wide Dual 1x20 WSS Card

➢ Four MPO connectors to Fiber Shuffle
➢ 384 x 12.5 GHz slices to support Flexgrid
➢ Per FlexChannel “bulk” attenuation setting, plus the ability to define a per channel spectral profile for intra-
channel ripple equalization (on a sub 12.5 GHz grid) if required.
➢ It can be provisioned to support standard fixed ITU 50GHz grid, or set to spectrally filter off grid following
ITU recommendation G.694.1
➢ These 4 MPOs are connected to the MSH8-FSM which passively routes these 20 fibre pairs to/from the other
7 degrees, 12 ADD/DROP blocks and 1 Expansion Duplex LC

MPO Fibering Mesh Fiber Shuffle Module
The MSH8-FSM is a rack mounted 3 RU passive module. All connectors for optical connections on the front plate are MPO type with 12
fibers. The shuffle is configured to support 8 degrees, 12 MCS add/drop blocks, and expansion to another add/drop layer (for future use).
An inventory port is provided for the node to inventory the module. The MSH8-FSM is used to provide the fiber shuffle between degrees,
to/from the MCS add/drop blocks, and to the expansion layer of the CDC-F ROADM. The shelf will have a shelf number in the range 25-64.
All ports are managed as multi-ports for the purpose of topology provisioning.

MCS8-16 (MultiCast Switch 8-Degrees, 16 Client Ports
> The MCS8-16 (MultiCast Switch supporting up to 8-degrees, with 16 client ports) is a 1-slot wide full height card. The 16-client ports are LC-based, while the
connections to the Amp Array (AAR-8A) are MPO-based. The card is capable of providing multicasting function for up to 8-optical degrees.
> Colorless, Directionless, Contentionless (CDC) add/drop is provided by the Multi-Cast Switch (MCS) card – it allows any coherent WDM carrier
from either a 100G uplink card or WDM 100G/200G OT to be switched to any optical degree. Can also carry without interference multiple
WDM carriers of the same color/wavelength that are being switched to different degrees, providing “contentionless” throughput, up to 8 occurrences.
> The MCS is always deployed with an Amplifier Array on connections to the WSS in order to boost the signal. It is needed because of the high
insertion loss of the WSS and the MCS.

Benefits of MCS8-16
>Provides clear separation of the multicast switch and select function from the amplification function, thereby allowing field replacement of failed amplifiers
w/o affecting the function of the MCS8-16 itself
>Allows growth from 4-D to 8-D simply by adding another Gain block (i.e. another AAR-8A) Enables CDC-F architecture with minimal fibering between the
amplification stages, thereby minimizing possible crossed fibering
.16 separate LC connectors allow for easy service addition (lighting of another UL card) w/o affecting existing traffic

The routing and wavelength algorithm (RWA) has an impact on a contention

If RWA is contention-aware, it can strongly reduce the contention in the network

AAR-8A (Amplifier Array – 8 discrete amps)
Due to the high insertion losses inherent in the CDC-F architecture, the AAR-8A (Amplifier ARray – 8 Amps) is required to amplify up to 16
channels between the Fiber Shuffle and the Multicast Switch. Each AAR-8A provides loss compensation for up to 4-degrees. The AAR-8A connects
the MSH8-FSM and the MCS8-16, and provides the correct amount of gain for the channels. Two MPO connectors are supported on the faceplate.

A block diagram is shown below. The AAR-8A is 1-slot wide, full height.

High-Level Amp specs:

Fixed gain, up to 16dBm Pout, gain ~15 dB.
Gain flattened, no coil heaters required
RS232 control, status, alarms (optical power,
temperature, pump currents, LOS)
No APR node is required due to low power

MPO Fibre Assignment
> AAR-8A is used with MCS8-16 to create an add/drop block.
> The AAR-8A pack is connected between the MSH8-FSM (fiber shuffle) and MCS8-16 to provide add and drop direction amplification.
> One AAR-8A is required for degrees 1-4, and a second AAR-8A is required for degrees 5-8.

MESH4BFS Fiber Shuffle

MESH4BFS
- Modular, bidirectional, fiber shuffle (ie fiber interconnection panel)
- High capacity 12-fiber MPO cables simplify intra-node connections
between units WSS WSS WSS
• Eliminates need for hundreds of individual fiber connections
- Provides in trade-off between using WSS ports for larger degree Fiber Shuffle
sizes vs drop capacity
- Modular – add additional fiber shuffle units as needed by node size Amp Array

and/or drop capacity MCS

Note: based on 64-chan / 75 GHz
