PUBLIC SPEAKING is the process or act of delivering a speech to a live audience. More
than just merely speaking or uttering words, it is consist of an array of factors such as those

1
verbal and non-verbal. In fact, according to a famous principle, much of what we do in public
speaking goes far beyond words. Let’s discuss them one by one.

2
FACTORS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING
1. VERBAL FACTORS
These are the elements of public speaking that lies within the utterances produced. They are stress, intonation,
juncture, and blending.
A. Stress is the accentuation of a syllable in a word or a word in a sentence. It is the emphasis given to an utterance to
make it sound louder, longer and clearer.
Examples: bi-O-lo-gy, SCI-ence, CE-re-mo-ny, in-ven-TO-ry, fif-TEEN
Make your time PRODUCTIVE. Make YOUR time productive.

B. Intonation is the rising or falling of the tone while speaking. This depends upon the type of utterance being made
and the meaning intended in an utterance.
Examples Have you been busy during quarantine period? ↑
Utilize your time to do your homeschooling. ↓
I spent my “quarantine time” plating succulents. ↓

C. Juncture is the essential pause in an utterance to provide meaning or emphasis in a statement.

Example: A while ago, | I ate mango| pie, | and suman. ||
A while ago, | I ate mango pie| and suman.||
D. Blending refers to the combination of end and beginning sounds of words in a statement to make them sound more
properly.
Example: The Doctor - /thə/ The Engineer - / thi/

2. NON-VERBAL FACTORS
On the other hand, non-verbal factors are those shown and exhibited by the speaker during a speech act.

A. Posture
One’s way of standing shows confidence and authority that exudes to the audience. Gentlemen
should put their feet apart, nearly in line with the shoulders, parallel to each other. Ladies should practice the 45-
degree rule for feet. Both should be have their stomach in, chest out, and chin up.
Avoid: Awkward Stance, Leaning, Hunchback, Stiff

B. Body Movements
Essential movements done while speaking give internal message to the audience. Nodding, walking, body
tilting and other body movements also add meaning to what is being said.
Avoid: Too much walking, turning back at audience, rocking back and forth, too much head and body movements

C. Gestures
Hand movements are important part of your visual picture when you speak in public. They are
reinforcements of the words and ideas you are trying to convey . They are non-verbal representations of how you
feel.
Kinds of Gestures:
 Symbolic Words- clenched fist, thumbs up/down, close / open palm, flexed arms.
 Number- fingers corresponding numbers, orders, quantities, durations
 Directions- hands or fingers pointing at directions, comparisons, and flow.
Avoid: Too much gestures, pointing at a person, hands in pockets, physical contact with audience,
unnecessary gestures

D. Facial Expressions
These are very useful tool in getting your message across. Using these expressions allows you to use
less words, to show emotion and to send a message directly to your audience's minds and hearts.
E. Eye Contact
This is used to connect with the audience and establish sincerity in communication. Do not focus on one
side (bias). Avoid fake eye contact (glancing). Look at the eyes (stare)

ETHICS IN PUBLIC SPEAKING

Ethics of public speaking are the rules or basis of behavior that a public speaker should consider. These
ethics must be observed to be able to gain their respect and establish a speaking credibility.
1. Show respect to your audience. Avoid stereotyping because your knowledge about your audience is limited. This
should be done to avoid offending your audience. They should be your top most consideration while preparing your
talk.
2. Respect their time. Avoid talking too much. Go straight to the point to avoid boredom among your audience.
Start on time and finish on time.
3. You must prepare your speech. Consider the time allotted for your talk in preparing for you to end on time. Make
an outline so you will be guided. Do not be too wordy and avoid adding language fillers.
4. Honesty will always be the best policy. Be honest to your audience. Never give them false information or never
think of misleading them. Your honesty to your audience is very important. Deception has no room in public

3
speaking.
5. Avoid plagiarism. Always acknowledge sources and never own someone’s work.
6. Ensure your objective is ethical. Be sure that your talk will be for the good of your audience and not to your own
good and comfort.
7. Be yourself. Never pretend to be someone else that you are not. Always remember that public speaking is not
acting on the stage. The audience should see the real you.

EVALUATING SPOKEN TEXTS

Spoken texts include oral stories, interviews, dialogues, monologues (e.g. a welcome to country
speech, a presentation to the class), phone conversations, discussions, role plays, or any other piece of
spoken language.
Evaluating spoken texts would require you to ask questions that revolve on verbal, non-verbal and
ethical considerations of public speaking. The criteria that you are going to use should cover these aspects of
public speaking. Thus knowing the factors and ethics of public speaking would help you evaluate spoken texts
better because you yourself know what is correct and what is not as far as public speaking is concerned.
