Assignment 1c: Making Comparisons
1) Open SA_Student_selected [Link].
2) Test whether the mean values of Mathematics scores (note: these are variables
calculated in week 3) are significantly different from 490 (OECD average)
a) for South Australia as a whole (one sample T-Test)
A one-sample t test was conducted on the Mathematics scores to evaluate whether the average
Mathematics performance of 15-year-old South Australian students is significantly lower or
higher compared to the OECD average. The results indicate the average Mathematics
performance of 15-years old South Australian students (M = 482.37, SD = 83.45) was
significantly different from the OECD average of 490, t(1679) = - 3.747 and p = 0.000. The 95%
confident interval for the Mathematics mean range from 478.3768 to 486.3640.
b) for each school sector (split file)
3) Compare Science achievement of students in government schools with students in
a) Catholic schools
An independent-sample t test was conducted to evaluate whether the average Science
achievement of Government School as well as Catholic Schools in South Australia. The results
indicate that on average, there is significant different in Science performance between Catholic
Schools (M = 507.84, SE = 93.83) and Government School (M = 479.42, SE=94.30) in South Australian
Schools, t(1311) = 4.99 and p = 0.000. The Catholic Schools have taken the lead . Figure 1 shows the
95% CI in Science Achievement for both Government School as well as Catholic Schools.
b) Independent schools
Group Statistics
School Sector N Mean Std. Deviation Std. Error Mean
Science Government Schools 922 479.4264 94.29562 3.10546
Independent Schools 367 540.8145 92.75899 4.84198
4) Compare Reading achievement of students in across the three school sectors in a
single analysis (ANOVA)
5) Produce error bars for Mathematics, Science, and Reading scores for South
Australia as a whole as well as for each school sector (Don’t split the file when you make a graph,
choose school sector as column)
5A
6) Calculate the total scores of parental supports (ST123Q01NA, ST123Q02NA,
ST123Q03NA, ST123Q04NA)
7) Test whether South Australian parents are supporting their child at school. (One Sample T-Test)
8) Test whether the on average mother’s education level is higher or lower than father’s
education level (paired sample)
a) for South Australia as a whole
b) for each school sector
