Lifeboat Engine function tests:

Attention:
a. STRICTLY FOLLOW PROCEDURES AS PRESCRIBED IN THE RELEVANT SECTIONS OF MAKER'S MAINTENENCE MANUAL.
b. RISK ASSESSMENT IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF EVERY JOB & CODE OF SAFE WORKING PRACTICES MUST BE OBSERVED.
c. COMPLY WITH WORKING ALOFT /OVERSIDE PERMIT PROCEDURES AS REQUIRED
d. WHILE WORKING IN THE LIEBOAT ENSURE BOAT SECURED OR ADDITIONAL SECURING MEASURES ARE IN PLACE
USE FALL PREVENTER DEVICES (FPD'S) IF ANYONE ENTERS THE LIFEBOAT FOR INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE OR DRILLS.
e. A SENIOR OFFICER MUST ENSURE THAT APPLICABLE COMPANY CHECKLISTS ARE COMPLIED WITH.

Note:
1. Strictly follow engine maker's instructions for testing engines.
2. Some engines such as outboard motors require that the water inlet is submerged in water at all times. In other words, operating these engines
without cooling water will damage the engine. In such cases, improvised cooling such as water in a drum must be adopted.
3. If engines are tested in sea water, some engines such as outboard motors require that the cooling system is flushed and the enclosures are washed
with fresh water. Follow maker's instructions and carry out this procedure.
4. confirm a prominent warning notice is in place in the boat in the vicinity of the engine, stating:

damage to the shafting and engine.

Job description:

1. Check battery elctrolyte level. charge and charger.


2. Check engine oil level and condition.

3. Check gear oil level and condition.
4. Check coolant level condition.
5. Check fuel tank level (full) and condition.
6. Test Lifeboat engine in NEUTRAL GEAR, for a duration not less than 3 minutes.
(Note: In the lifeboat stowed position, with the absence of engine cooling medium, duration of test should not be longer tha maker's recommendation
under such circumstaces. In any case discretion to be exeecised to avoid engine overheating).
7. While engine in operation:
7.1 Check for leaks (leakage repairs must be of permanent nature)
7.2 Check engine instrumentation.
7.3 6. Check audible and visual alarms. Change sensors, lamp and switched as needed.
8. Check smooth functioning of steering gear.
9. BRIEFLY TEST ENGINE GEAR (no longer than 3 seconds in each direction) IN AHEAD AND ASTERN POSITION.
