Who are we?
The Qatar University Gas Processing Center (GPC) was launched in March of 2007 to
be the main research center in the State of Qatar addressing challenges and
opportunities in the field of gas processing. The Center enjoys an excellent relationship
with local and international companies that have presence in Qatar. Its consortium has
attracted major players in the gas industry.
In addition to the research activities, the center is offering periodic technical training
programs and is organizing an annual international symposium on gas processing starting
January 2009. The Center is collaborating with world leading universities and institutes to
provide the best quality training sessions.
This training course is organized in collaboration with Qatar Shell and Qatar Shell
Research Technology Centre
building on Shell’s worldwide experience in executing major capital projects. Shell
is building two of the leading energy projects in the world in Ras Laffan Industrial City
(RLIC).
Qatar Petroleum (QP) and Shell launched the Pearl GTL project in July 2006. The project
comprises the development of upstream gas production facilities as well as an onshore
GTL plant that will produce 140,000 barrels per day of high quality GTL fuels and
products along with 120,000 bpd of condensate, liquefied petroleum gas and ethane.
Pearl GTL is not only the world’s largest integrated GTL project, but also the largest
energy project ever launched within the borders of Qatar.
The QP and Shell-sponsored Qatargas 4 LNG project includes the construction of a 7.8
million tones-per-annum LNG train.
Trainers
Niels Fabricius was Technical Manager for Pearl GTL up to his retirement in 2006. He is
now Senior Technical Advisor to Qatar Shell. He has worked more than 39 years in the
oil industry and held various technical, operational and commercial positions in the Shell
offices in The Hague and in London as well as in refineries in The Netherlands Antilles,
Denmark, Thailand and Saudi Arabia.
After gaining a MSc. (Chemical Engineering) at the Technical University of Denmark in
Copenhagen in 1968, he joined Shell Manufacturing in The Hague as Process Engineer,
Distillation in 1970. In 1975 he moved to Shell Curacao NV in the Netherlands Antilles as
Refinery Technologist, Catalytic and Thermal Cracking, returning to The Hague in 1979 as
Group leader Distillation. In 1983 he moved to London for a position as Luboil Supply
Analyst in Supply & Marketing. He returned again to The Hague in 1986 for a one year
study on ‘New Look Refining’ before moving to his native Denmark for a position in the
Fredericia Refinery as Refinery Superintendent. In 1990 he took up a position as
Manufacturing Manager in the Thaioil Refinery in Sriracha, Thailand. In 1992 he again
returned to The Hague as Process Coordination Manager in the project team responsible
for designing and building the Rayong Refinery in Thailand and later became Refinery
Manager and Executive Director for Rayong Refinery Company during the start-up and
two first years of operation. From 1998 until 2001 he was Executive Vice President of the
Saudi Aramco Shell Refinery Company in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia before moving to a
position in Shell Gas & Power as Vice President Gas to Liquids Projects and from early
2002 he was Technical Manager for the Pearl GTL Project in Qatar.
John Hesse in Manager – Marketing, Logistics and Supply in QatarShell Gas toLiquids.
Hehas worked in the Oil industry for over 28 years in various technical and commercial
roles. He worked in The Netherlands, Dominican Republic, UK, USA, Saudi Arabia and
Qatar where he is currently located. In 1981 John finished his Chemical Engineering
degree at Groningen University and started his career at Shell Pernis as a refinery
technologist. After further assignments in Economics and Operations he moved to the
Dominican Republic as the Chief Technologist for the Haina Refinery in 1989. From there
he went on to Jubail Refinery as the Economics and Scheduling Manager and
subsequently to Shell Trading in Rotterdam in 1995, became the Shell Chemical
Feedstock Trading Manager in London in 1999 and moved to Houston in a similar role in
2002. From Houston he was invited in 2005 to join the Pearl GTL team as the Marketing
