HSMC 101
Introduction
The subject aims to cultivate a well-rounded skill set in communication, critical thinking, cultural
awareness all of which are crucial for navigating today’s diverse and dynamic world. The course
not only fosters a strong command of the English language but also nurtures creativity, analytical
skills, and intellectual curiosity. This academic pathway prepares individuals to communicate
effectively, think critically, and engage with global cultures—traits that are invaluable in both
professional and personal development.
Course Objectives:
1. To enhance analytical thinking abilities, which can be applied in various sectors
2. To hone skills in creative writing and other forms of artistic expression
3. To help students articulate content for clear and persuasive communication.

Unit 1: VOCABULARY BUILDING
The concept of Word Formation
Root words from foreign languages and their use in English
Acquaintance with prefixes and suffixes from foreign languages in English to for derivatives.
Synonyms, antonyms, and standard abbreviations.
Unit II: BASIC WRITING SKILLS
Sentence Structures
Use of phrases and clauses in sentences
Importance of proper punctuation
Creating coherence
Organizing principles of paragraphs in documents
Techniques for writing precisely
Unit III: IDENTIFYING COMMON ERRORS IN WRITING

Course Outcomes:
After the completion of the course, the students will be able to:
CO1: Students will develop advanced proficiency in both written and spoken English,
enabling them to effectively communicate
CO2: Students will cultivate creative writing skills.
CO3: Students will be able to inculcate creative and aesthetic sensitivity and critical faculty
through comprehension, appreciation and analysis of the prescribed literary texts.
CO4: Familiarize with essentials of grammar of English language.
Lectures
You are expected to attend 3 (50 min) lectures each week.
The lectures will present a range of concepts, knowledge and ideas about the topic for that week.
The topics covered in the lectures will be assessed in the sessionals and your semester exams. It
will also help you strengthen your fundamentals.

According to the JCBOSE YMCA UNIVERSITY guidelines you must attend at least
75% of classes in order to pass this unit of study.
Theory Assessment
Your assessment has two major components designed to fit in with the learning objectives of this
unit of study. Whether you are delivering an oral presentation, answering an exam question or
writing the exam, you must argue and use evidence:

You must complete each of the above components to pass the subject and fulfil the attendance
requirements. That means, to pass, you must attend and participate in 75% of the lectures. Failure
to complete one of the above components means you will fail the subject.
Semester Exam (Assessment weightage, 75 marks)
The Semester Exam is of 50 marks which includes 7 questions in total. There will be 2 sections in
the question paper. 1st question is compulsory and 2nd Section consists of 6 questions in which
you must attempt any four questions.
