UNPOLARIZED LIGHT:
Definition:
Ordinary light also known as
unpolarized light Is an EMR in which all of the
light waves oscillate in different directions.
EXAMPLE:
Sunlight
Moon light
Light bulbs
Lightning
POLARIZATION:
Definition:
The interference and diffraction
have confirmed the wave nature of light but
it is not decided through these phenomena
whether light waves are transverse or
longitudinal. The phenomena which decided
the transverse nature of light is called
polarization.
Example:
Sunglasses, LCD screens, Optical fibers.
Types of polarization:
Linear polarization
Circular polarization
Elliptical polarization
Linear polarization:
The linear polarization
of electromagnetic radiation is confinement
of electric field vector or magnetic field
vector to a given plane along direction of
propagation.
The field oscillate in a single plan.
Circular polarization:
The circular polarization of em wave is a
polarization state at which at every point the
electromagnetic field of wave has a constant
magnitude but it’s direction rotates at
constant rate into plane perpendicular to
direction of wave.
The electric field vector rotates in a circular
motion.
Elliptical polarization:
The elliptical polarization of electromagnetic
radiation such that the tip of electric field
vector describes an ellipse in any fixed plane
intersecting and normal to direction of
propagation.
The electric field vector rotates In an
elliptical motion.
