1. (a) Draw the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 2 for −3 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3.


(b) From your graph,
(i) the value of y when x = 1.7,
(ii) the coordinates of the maximum or minimum point,
(iii) the equation of the line of symmetry.

2. (a) Draw the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 2 for −4 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3.


(b) From your graph, find
(i) the value of y when x=1.6,
(ii) the values of x when y=5,
(iii) the smallest value of y,
(iii) the equation of the line of symmetry of 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 2.

3. Copy and complete the table which gives the values of 𝑦 = 1 + 2𝑥 − 𝑥 2 for −3 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 5.

(b) Using a scale of 2 cm to represent 1 unit on the x-axis and 1 cm to represent 1 unit on the

y-axis, draw the graph of 𝑦 = 1 + 2𝑥 − 𝑥 2 .

(c) From your graph, find

(i) the values of y when x = -1.6 and 3.2,

(ii) the values of x when y = -9,

(iii) the greatest value of y and the corresponding value of x,

(iv) the equation of the line of symmetry of the curve.

4. Complete the table of values for 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 9.

(a) Using a scale of 2 cm to represent 1 unit on the x-axis and 2 cm to represent 5 units on the
y-axis, draw the graph of 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 9 for −5 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3.
(b) From your graph, find
(i)the x-coordinates of the points on the curve where y=10,

(ii) the y-coordinate of the point on the curve where x = -2.5,

(iii) the equation of the line symmetry,

(iv) the solutions to the equation 2𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 9 = 0.

5. (a) Draw the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 3 for −3 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3.

(b)State the equation of the line of symmetry of the curve.

(c) Use your graph to solve 𝑥 2 − 3 = 0.
