(10) Prose -
Flamingo
Answer in 40-50 words each. 5x2=10
(i) Sophie loved her brother Geoff- could tell him her innermost thoughts- he
would listen to her without interrupting- never dismissed her thoughts as
flights of fantasy- words had to be prized out of his mouth like stones
from the ground- she was jealous of his silence- thought he had
connections in a different world near the city- wanted to be a part of it-
she often dreamt of riding behind Geoff in fancy clothes.
(ii) Mukund was an excellent interviewer- knew how to elicit
information from the interviewee- made sure the interviewee didn’t get
annoyed- never touched any personal matters-asked questions what the
readers wanted to know about Umberto Eco.
(iii) The tramp realised that going to the manor house was like throwing
himself voluntarily into the lion’s den. He was worried if the thirty kronors
he had with him would act against him. The literary device used here is
simile.
(iv) Gandhiji decided to go to Muzzafarpur, en route to Champaran, to
obtain more complete information about conditions than Shukla was
capable of imparting - met Prof. J.B Kripalini & Prof. Malkani and lawyers
to learn about the problem in Champaran
(v) ‘See you soon, Amma’ are the parting words of the poet. Parting
words and smile signify – hope – of seeing her mother when she comes
back
(vi)Umberto Eco tells that it may be because of the timing, wouldn’t have
had the same impact , if written ten years earlier or later, readers

(i) Professor Harley, a dull man – at whose house Dr. Sadao met Hana- his
wife- a silly talkative woman, who wished to be kind, old teacher of
anatomy, who was insistent on mercy with the knife, fat slatternly
landlady – though grateful for nursing him through influenza – the
youthful, haggard face of the prisoner
(ii)By ‘Eating by formula,’ Zitkala-Sa
7 meant the discipline the pupils had
to follow at the dining room- first bell to pull out the chairs-second bell to
be seated followed by prayers- third bell to begin eating with fork and
spoon.
(iii) The author was only in the third grade, around eight years old, still
developing her emotional ability. Till that time, she had not heard people
speaking openly about untouchability. She just understood that certain
individuals were treated differently, not having comprehended the
problem properly.

(12) Long answer question – Flamingo

pancakes- turning a decent looking person into a hideous crimson hued
monster- a strict hierarchy maintained in the department- the office boy
mixing his paint in a giant vessel – slapping it on the crowd players- how
he used to enlighten the author about how a great literary talent was
wasted- how Subbu would come out with fourteen alternatives to satisfy
the producer- the lawyer , a man of cold magic in a crowd of dreamers.

(b) Saheb: Hello Mukesh.
Mukesh: Hello, nice to meet you.
Saheb: Heard that you want to be a motor mechanic.
Mukesh: Yes, I ‘d love to. But, I’m not sure, if I will be successful. The
garage is far away. I am ready to walk down every day. But I’m not
sure how the elders are going to react to it. I hope they will not be a
hindrance to it.
Saheb: You have to break free from the expectations of the elders and
move

on. Mukesh: Yes, I know. I am trying to do that.


Saheb: I am working in a tea stall now. It takes care of food and gives me
Rs.800/-
. I am happy I am of some help to my parents, though I have lost my
freedom. Mukesh: Let’s hope that soon, boys like us would not have to
work from very young age and will be able to get educated.
Saheb: I hope so too.

(a) Content - Any 3 with explanation

Instances of irony to expose the hollowness and false pride of those in


power.
-The tiger king comments, " I have killed the hundredth tiger. My vow
has been fulfilled." The tiger falls down and the Tiger King thinks he has
finally shot dead his hundredth tiger! But the tiger was not dead.
- The Tiger King's warning to the tigers, "Let tigers beware!" What he
doesn't know is that it is he, himself who should beware of tigers, the
hundredth tiger in fact, because he doesn't know that the hundredth
tiger, wooden though it might be would end in his death.
- In the statement that, 'From that day onwards it was celebration time
for all the tigers inhabiting Pratibandapuram.' It is ironic because the
tigers don't realise that from henceforth their lives were in danger
because of the Maharaja himself. They celebrate not knowing that they
are going to be killed one by one!
- The king - killing innocent animals just for the sake of fulfilling one's
desires. Not even powerful people have the right to kill wild animals.
The Tiger King is aware of this fact and so he uses "self-defence," as an
excuse to kill his first few tigers
- "The operation was successful. The Maharaja is dead." The statement
made by the surgeons, what they say after the operation is an example
of irony . Operation was expected to save the life of the Tiger King but
the opposite happened
OR
(b) Day / Date
Long hair forcefully cut at Carlisle Indian school- the pale face woman
staring at her--her friend Judewin overhearing the talk- hair would be
shingled- mother had told her short hair was for mourners, shingled hair
for cowards- hides in a large, dim room with three white beds- windows
covered with dark green curtains- hears the footsteps-name being
called- dragged out-resisted by kicking and scratching wildly-felt the
cold blades of the scissors against the neck- moaned for mother- could
have got the help of boys or could have covered the hair to avoid the
cutting.
