CONFESSION BY KOFI KINAATA.
Oh lord come take the wheel
For I’m drunk, I can’t see
I am about to lose control
Ei , I can’t see , I am about to lose control, lord
Sunday, from here I go to sakomono
I get mad there when I am told the ono-tuo is finished
Pastor can call and ask of my whereabouts
When it comes to church attendance, Mensah s my brother
I am a truant
But instead of being in church, I will be in Vienna City
My best friend has come from Equatorial Guinea
All the boys get drunk
We box up the alcoholic drinks; what we took was epitorial guiness
I am really, I am in a real stupor
I go reverse without looking back
The road signs make no sense
The red light is an old currency; I jump it
SURFACE MEANING.
This poem is a lyrical poem,a street gospel.
Stanza one: Is about the persona losing his ability to drive because he is drunk and
he is seeking the help of the lord.
Stanza two: The persona goes further to say he will be going to eat omo- tuo on
Sunday. Rather than going to church he will be at Vienna city. His pastor will ask
of his where about but when it comes to church he is truant which shows he
doesn’t care about that.
Stanza three: His best friend has arrived from Equatorial Guinea and because of
that they will be jubilating. They got drunk with Guinness and pito. He is so drunk
that he can’t even obey the road signs.
CONOTATIONAL MEANING.
Kofi kinaata’s poem is purely metaphorical. He describes things in terms of others.
He talks about the steering wheel, driving to a destination and in conceptual theory,
life is a journey that begins from one point to another and in every journey there
are positive and negative aspects of it.
In the second and third stanzas of the poem, there are list of things that satisfy the
human body. These serve as long list of things that serve as blockage in his
journey. They do not just allow him to go ,he is not only confused but he also goes
blind and has lost his whole being to the extent that when he gets to the traffic light
he can’t even notice the red light is on. That is why he is giving that cry sound;
oh! Lord come take the. So all that is listed in this poem are the obstacles, their
presence of which can’t allow one to get to his destination.
The persona used the language of the street but this a poem of evangelism. He is
speaking like a sinner and crying like a sinner and not someone who is holy. That
is why he uses the language known as social linguistic. “This is a language that
belongs to a particular group of people (getto). He is speaking to people in the
getto but not people in the church.
The message in this poem is that, you are doing all sort of despicable things and if
you don’t stop you will lose your soul.
