1. Examinations administered by the SQA on behalf of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.
2. Candidates should note that 100 marks are allocated to this paper. To pass candidates
must achieve 60% of the total marks available. In addition, candidates must achieve a
minimum of 70% from Section A.
3. Non-programmable calculators may be used.
4. All formulae used must be stated and the method of working and all intermediate steps
must be made clear in the answer.

Section A
1. (a) At 0200 hrs a vessel is undergoing temporary engine repairs and is stopped
and making no way.
The OOW makes the following observations:
East Channel Buoy (49º59'N 002º29'W) bearing 151ºC at a distance of
11.0 miles
Channel Buoy (49º55'N 002º55'W) bearing 224ºC
Variation 4ºW.
Determine EACH of the following:
(i) the position of the vessel at 0200 hrs; (10)
(ii) the deviation of the compass for the direction of the ships head. (4)
(b) At 0300 hrs the temporary repairs are completed and the Master decides to
proceed to Tor Bay, at a reduced speed of 9.0 knots to drop anchor in position
50º 26'.0N 003º 31'.0W and carry out permanent repairs to the engine.
A tidal stream is estimated as per D 2 hrs after HW Devonport (springs)
and a SW’ly wind is estimated to cause 2º of leeway.
Determine EACH of the following:
(i) the compass course to steer to the anchorage; (7)
(ii) the ETA at the anchorage. (5)

2. (a) On Worksheet Q2 mark and clearly label the levels between which EACH of
the following are measured:
(i) air draught; (2)
(ii) charted vertical clearance; (2)
(iii) mean spring range; (2)
(iv) UKC. (2)
(b) A container vessel departing Avonmouth (No.523 ATT United Kingdom and
Ireland) with a draught of 10.7 m and an air draft of 29.4 m must pass under
a bridge with a clearance of at least 2.5 m. The bridge has a charted vertical
clearance of 26.5 m. The charted depth directly below the bridge is 8.4 m.
Calculate EACH of the following:
(i) the highest height of tide that the vessel will be able to pass under the
bridge with the required clearance; (3)
(ii) the under keel clearance (UKC) at that time. (3)
Section B
3. Chart 5056
(a) With reference to Bill of Portland light (50º31 002º27'W), state the purpose
of the fixed red light. (2)
(b) State the nature of the seabed in position 50º13'.4N 002º35'.2W. (4)
(c) The Master intends to use the vessel’s ECDIS system to monitor a coastal
passage in clear visibility.
(i) State the THREE checks that must be made, prior to leaving the berth,
on the ECDIS system for it to be an effective monitoring tool. (6)
(ii) State FOUR factors that should be taken into account by the OOW when
using ECDIS to monitor the passage. (8)
4. A vessel is to make a passage from Balboa (Panama) to Guam (Mariana Islands)
using the following departure and landfall positions. The vessel’s service speed
is 19.5 knots.
Dep Position Balboa 07º 00'N 080º 42'W
Landfall position Guam 13º 50'N 144º 50'E
(a) Using the waypoints, calculate the rhumb line course and distance for the
ocean passage. (12)
(b) Inspection of the monthly Admiralty Routeing charts for the time of year
indicates that there will be adverse current of one knot for the first
2400 miles and have no effect for the remainder of the passage.
The vessel reaches the departure position at 0600 hrs ST (+05) on the
25th June.
Determine the ETA Standard Time at the landfall position. (8)
[OVER
5. (a) A vessel in DR position 16º30'N 142º42'W makes the following observation of
the planet VENUS.
Date: 09th June
Time at ship: 0620 hrs
Chronometer read: 03h 56m 29s
Chronometer error: 2m 48s FAST on UTC
Gyro bearing 097ºG
Calculate EACH of the following:
(i) the true bearing of VENUS; (12)
(ii) the error of the gyro compass. (2)
(b) Outline SIX Navigational factors to be considered when selecting a safe
anchorage. (6)
