TRAMGARI SCRIPT V1 - YELLOW REVISION

1 EXT. NORTH KOLKATA, CORNOWALLIS STREET - EARLY MORNING 1

The entire city is covered in fog and mist. Its winter in the
city of joy. The birds are chirping, the crows are cawing, as
the tram approaches through the mist. There's a flock of
pigeons sitting on the tram line. As the tram approaches them
and the bell rings, they fly away making way for the goliath.
The bell of the tram acts as an alarm for many.

2 INT. A LITTLE GIRLS' ROOM NEAR THE TRAMLINE - CONTINUOUS 2


The GIRL wakes up to the bell of the tram. She is looking out
of her window of her darkened room. the tram bell still
ringing as her GRANDFATHER starts calling out to her telling
her to get ready for school
GRANDFATHER
Shona Maa! Oh Shona Maa! Uthe por.
School jete hobe, deri hoe jabe
nahole.

3 EXT. NORTH KOLKATA, CORNOWALLIS STREET - MORNING 3


Both the GIRL and the GRANDFATHER are standing on the main
road waiting for the tram to arrive. The girl is all dressed
up in her uniform and the grandfather is holding a baazarer
tholi in his hand. The tram comes and stops in front of the
girl as she is staring at it, mesmerised. Both of them board
the tram.

4 INT. TRAM NEAR VIVEKANANDA ROAD CROSSING - MORNING 4


The tram is filled with passengers as the conductor is
walking around the tram asking for fare. These two settle
down near the rear of the second bogie on one of the side
facing seats. The tram is filled, yet it is not congested.
The girl looks at her grandfather and smiles mischievously.
GIRL
(Chuckles as she speaks)
Dadu, oi elo bole!
The tram while going through the vivekananda road crossing,
jolts up and down giving rigorous jerks to the passengers
GRANDFATHER
O re baba re! Ebar har gor sob
benge debe mone hoe!

Both of them laugh as the conductor approaches one of the


passengers to pay the fare. The passenger hands him over a
hundred rupee note. Getting furious he asks for change as its
too big a currency to pay the fare and a quarrel breaks out.
TRAM CONDUCTOR
Dekhi dada....(shuffling the
tickets)
Aree dada, kuchro din
THE PASSENGER
Kuchro nei dada, ei ektai note.
TRAM CONDUCTOR
Tahole nebe jaan.
THE PASSENGER
Aree dada acchai muskil
toh...bolchi toh aar onno taka nei
TRAM CONDUCTOR
Tahole Bollam toh nebe jaan. Sokkal
sokkal jamela...
A second passenger, an elder man who is sitting beside the
passenger and witnessing this entire drama-
SECOND PASSENGER
(Calls the conductor and
pays the fare for the
fellow passenger)
O bhai, sokal sokal jhamela korcho
kano.....ei nao, ami dicchi.
The conductor collects the fare, annoyed and the tram stops
moving.

5 EXT. COLLEGE STREET BATA - CONTINUOUS 5

Somebody has parked their cart (thela gari/ cycle van) on the
tram line which is blocking the way of the tram. The
conductor disembarks and starts inquiring about the owner of
the vehicle, but nobody comes forward. A crowd has gathered,
inquisitive about the occurings. Getting frustrated he asks
the crowd only to help him out. Some of the people come
forward along with him and some of the passengers manage to
remove it from the tramline. The tram starts moving.

TRAM CONDUCTOR
ANNOYED STARTS SCREAMING

Oh bhai! Eta kar? Sorao na tartari!


Lok e office e jabe toh! School
ache. Deri hoe jacche.
Bhai ektu haat lagao na, eta soriye
di!

THE CROWD
Cholo cholo.

6 INT. TRAM NEAR PRESIDENCY COLLEGE - MORNING 6


The view of the 'boi bazar' is seen through the window of the
tram. A few school students board the moving tram and hang
near the door. They stay near the door itself; laughing and
chatting among themselves.
STUDENT 1
Bhai aj kothaye niye jabe?

STUDENT 2
tui cho toh bolchi...aree oi dekh
eshe gachee.....choo choo choo oth
taratari!
STUDENT 1
(after boarding)
Bhai amader porrikhaye na byapok
chaap lagche jano.
STUDENT 2
(takes a biri out of his
pocket)
Sobh chaap er ei ektai somadhan

Both of them laughs and starts smoking


The conductor approaches them asking for the fare, when they
disembark from the moving tram and run away.

TRAM CONDUCTOR
(shuffling the tickets)
dekhi....

BOTH STUDENTS IN UNISON


Kar ta?

TRAM CONDUCTOR
Aree shoitan er dol bhara ta ke
debe.

There is a boy sitting in a white uniform carrying a cricket


kit bag.

MATCH CUT TO:

7 INT. TRAM NEAR MAIDAN - AFTERNOON 7


The same bag is seen but different characters. There are a
four children going to play cricket in the Maidan, carrying
bat and ball.

8 EXT. TRAM AT MAIDAN - CONTINUOUS 8

The tram is seen coming through the vast stretches of


greenery beside the Maidan, Fort William and the Race Course.
A close up on the wheels which finally comes to stop at the
traffic signal.

9 INT. TRAM NEAR MAIDAN - AFTERNOON 9

When the tram stops the children start to play inside the
tram itself, as the conductor yells at them to behave
themselves. The youngest amongst them looks out of the window
and notices the tonga standing beside the tram and looks at
it in awe.

TRAM CONDUCTOR
Ki hocche ta ki! Eta ki Gorer
Maath, badmash sobkota.

10 EXT. TRAM AT MAIDAN - CONTINUOUS 10

At the same traffic signal the tram, buses, taxis, cars and
the tonga are all standing, waiting for the light to turn
green. As the gaanwala starts to sing.

FADE OUT:

11 EXT. TRAM NEAR RABINDRA SAROVAR - EVENING 11

The tram is travelling from beside the lake as the song of


the gaanwala continues and gradually fades into the sound of
the traffic. The feriwala's voice takes over.

FERIWALA
Badaam ache badaam. 10 taka 10 taka
10 taka. Badam pabe logenze pabe
tok jhaal misti.

12 INT. TRAM NEAR SOUTHERN AVENUE - EVENING 12

The feriwala is selling roasted peanuts to the passengers. He


reaches out to tear one of his packets. He get hold of it and
time skips when he tears it.

MATCH CUT TO:

13 INT. TRAM AT PRESENT DAY- EVENING 13

His hand has grown old with more wrinkles and the colour
scheme has also changed. The entire compartment of the tram
is empty, with only three characters inside, the conductor,
the feriwala and a senile old man reading a
'vartaman'(present) newspaper. It has been published, that
the trams will be put on a halt to reduce traffic congestion
during Durga Puja. He reads it out loud.

THE OLD MAN


(he chuckles bitterly
while speaking)
Ebare Pujo e naki tram er bisorjon
debe!
TRAM CONDUCTOR
Pujo naki chai! Eder sudhu jomi
chai.

FADE IN FADE OUT:

A few still of durga puja celebration showing its hype and


grandeur.

CUT TO:

14 EXT. SYMBAZAR TRAM DEPOT - EVENING 14

All the trams are trapped inside the dead desolated depot, no
better than a graveyard. The celebration goes on outside the
gates of the depot as the trams lay dead in deafening
silence. A procession is heard from a distance approaching
and slowly fading away as the trams lay there motionless.

PROCESSION
Bolo Dugga Mai ki, Joy! Asche
bodchor, abar hobe! Bochor bochor,
abar hobe! Bolo Dugga Mai ki, Joy

FADE TO BLACK.
