The Delos Reyes family has faced difficult weeks. Lolo Henry had
Dengue, Erica caught the flu, and Eliana had a scare involving HIV.
As they recover, the family reflects on their experiences and the
lessons they’ve learned.
The family is gathered in their living room after recovering from a tough
period where several members fell ill.
Lolo Henry:
Ah, it feels good to sit here with everyone. Dengue was no joke! The fever,
the weakness—it was scary.
Lola Eliza:
Hayst, we were all worried, Henry. The doctor said it was because of
mosquito bites.
Matthew:
I feel bad, Lolo. I saw water in an old tire in the backyard and forgot to tell
anyone.
Marina:
It’s okay, Matthew, we have all learned. From now on, we’ll keep the yard
clean and check for standing water every week.
Melleena:
I’ll help, too! I’ll tell you if I see any puddles.
Tita Ella:
Eyy that’s the spirit, Melleena. Mosquitoes breed in water, so keeping the
area clean is the best way to prevent Dengue.
Erica:
Guys guys, I still feel tired from the flu, and it wasn’t fun either. I didn’t know
how tired and sick it could make you feel. *achoo!/sneeze*
Elio:
Hay nako, Erica. You are sneezing a lot!
Erica:
I know, okay! The doctor said I probably caught it from school. I should’ve
washed my hands more and stayed home when I first felt sick.
Tita Ella:
That’s right, Erica. The flu spreads easily. Wash your hands regularly, cover
your mouth when you cough, and get vaccinated every year. Oh, and when
you are washing your hands, sing the happy birthday song 2 times in order
to get all the bacteria from our hands! Like Happy Birthday to you (sings the
happy birthday song)
Matthew:
I’ll remind you, Erica. I don’t want to catch it again either!
Tita Eliana:
Guys hear me out on my story. My doctor told me I was at risk for HIV.
Thankfully, my test came back negative, but it was a wake-up call.
ALL:
HIV?!
Tita Eliana:
Thankfully, my test came back negative, but it was a wake-up call. It scared
my boyfriend and I but it reminded us how important it is to know the risks
and get tested.
Marina:
Oh my gosh, Eliana. But HIV isn’t something to fear if you take precautions.
Be responsible, avoid risky behavior, and encourage others to stay informed.
Tita Eliana:
Oh yes I learned my lesson. My boyfriend and I will use protection next time
Matthew:
Oh, thanks for explaining this. I’ll make sure to be cautious and informed.
Melleena:
Mommy, what is HIV?
Marina:
(hesitant) Uh… well… it’s—
Lola Eliza:
(jumping in gently) I can explain, Melleena. HIV is a virus that attacks your
immune system, which is what helps your body fight infections. It spreads
through certain activities, like sharing needles or unprotected contact. It’s
serious, but it’s also preventable.
Melleena:
Oh, so if we’re careful, we won’t get it?
Lolo Henry:
That’s right, mija!
Lola Eliza:
(giggles) Exactly, Melleena. And it’s good to ask questions when you don’t
understand something.
Erica:
Wow, thanks, Lola Eliza. I didn’t know much about it either, but now I do.
The family listens carefully, turning their hardships into valuable
lessons.
Lola Eliza:
From now on, we’ll all work together to stay healthy. ‘Kay kids?
Matthew:
I’ll help clean the backyard and use mosquito repellent!
Erica:
I’ll wash my hands more and cover my sneezes.
Eliana:
And I’ll keep learning and staying informed about health risks.
Elio:
This is a team effort. We’ll protect each other by being responsible and
proactive.
Narrator:
The Delos Reyes family makes a pact to prioritize their health, turning their
experiences into a foundation for a healthier future.
