Catalogue of Declensional Endings 1
Quick recall of what an inflectional ending indicates is an important skill for successful reading of
continuous texts. On the other hand, making the wrong diagnosis of an ending because one does not consider
enough possibilities is a problem for inexperienced readers. A useful drill in class is to write an ending on the
board and ask how many different types of nouns or adjectives use this ending and for what case(s). The following
catalogue compiles a lot of the answers, but may not be entirely complete. In addition, of course, many of these
endings are also found on verb forms, but that complication is not covered here.
In the following, references to vowel-declension adjectives should be taken to apply also to
adjective/pronouns or pronouns that feature vowel-declension endings, such as οὗτος, ἐκεῖνος, τοιοῦτος, ὅσος,
ὅς.
