 PREFACE

These two volumes of proceedings contain 11 invited keynote papers, 33 invited

papers, and 225 contributed papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on
Advances in Steel Structures (ICASS '05) held on 13-15 June 2005 in Shanghai, China.
The conference was the fourth in the series of International Conferences on Advances
in Steel Structures with the previous conferences being held in Hong Kong in December
1996, 1999 and 2002.
These conferences provide a forum for discussion and dissemination by researchers
and designers of recent advances in the analysis, behavior, design and construction of steel
structures. Contributions to the papers came from 22 countries around the world and cover a
wide spectrum of topics including the current state-of-the-art as well as anticipating the future
directions of research in steel, metal and composite structures.
The organization of the conference would not have been possible without the support
and contribution of many individuals and organizations. The strong support from the Tongji
University, Prof. Y. Y. Chen, Dean of the College of Civil Engineering and Prof. Q.L. Zhang,
Vice-Dean of the College of Civil Engineering, has been pivotal in the successful

Simo Piiroinen tunsi suurta helpotusta. Hyvinhän tämä nyt

menikin.
Velasta ei mitään puhetta, ja varakas mies vävyksi.

Ja kun ei Annastiina ollut vastustellut silloin, kun oli aikaisemmin

ollut puhetta siitä mahdollisuudesta, että hän joutuisi emännäksi
Piippuvaaran Kasuriseen, niin katsoi hän voivansa hyvällä
omallatunnolla luvata:

— Mitäpäs siinä olisi minulla vastaan… ja Annastiinan minä kyllä

tiedän suostuvan… niin että olkoon vain minun puolestani.

— Annatko kättä päälle? kysyi Aapeli Kasurinen innostuneena.

— Raahtiihan tätä, sanoi Simo Piiroinen ja ojensi kämmenensä.

Sillävälin olivat Iivo Mutanen ja hänen puhemiehensä Teppo

Kiiskinen tulleet tupaan.

— Eikös se ole Piippuvaaran Aapeli Kasurisen hevonen, joka on

tuolla aidassa kiinni? kysyi Iivo Mutanen tupaan tultuaan.

Emäntä sanoi, että senhän se, ja ilmoitti, että vieraat juuri läksivät
isännän kanssa kamariin.
 — Taitavat olla sillä asialla? sanoi Iivo Mutanen, ja emäntäkin
arveli, että sillä kai ne ovat.

— No kyllä ne nyt saavat sen toimitukseen! takasi Iivo Mutanen

reilusti.

Piiroisen emännällä oli nyt keveä mieli ja hyvä olla. On se sentään

mies, tuo Iivo, vaikka sitä jotkut syyttä suotta moittivat. Emäntä alkoi
heti kantaa päivällistä pöytään, latoi sinne piiraat, uunipaistit, kiisselit
ja rusinasopat, ja kun Aapeli Kasurinenkin ja Pekka Turunen samassa
palasivat isännän kanssa tupaan, niin käski emäntä kaikkia
puoliselle.

Miesväki asettui pöytään. Iivo Mutanen huomasi, ettei Aapeli

Kasurinen, joka näytti olevan erikoisen hyvällä tuulella, ollut häntä
paljon näkevinäänkään, mutta hän irvotti vain rauhallisesti ja odotteli
aikaansa.

— Kiitoksia vain siitä pässin tuomisesta, sanoi Simo Piiroinen

Iivolle. — Siinä se nyt on pässi edessäsi vadissa, niin että ota
hänestä itsestään palkkasi.

— Tuli kyllä syötyä pihasta lähtiessä, kertoi Iivo Mutanen, mutta

pitäneehän tätä pässiä maistaa.

— Minulla tämä onkin ensimmäinen vero tänä päivänä, ilmoitti

Teppo Kiiskinen. — Maha jo taisi arvella, että onko kurkku hirtetty,
kun ei ruokaa saanut.

— Kuuluu se Lappalaisen mökki palaneen siellä Rumpsussa, sanoi

Simo
Piiroinen.
 — Öyhähtihän se, vakuutti Iivo Mutanen, ja puhtaaksi menikin.

— Tuli siinä sitten kurssi lutikoillenkin, otaksui Teppo Kiiskinen.

— Tuli.

Nyt tulivat tupaan Piipariskakin ja Heikki Piiparinen, jotka

Annastiina oli eilen illalla kutsunut. Nähdessään Piipariskan huudahti
emäntä:

— No siinähän se on tämä Piipariskakin… minnekkäs se Annastiina

on jäänyt?

Piipariskasta oli vähän kummaa, ettei Annastiina vielä ollut

kotiutunut, mutta kun häntä ei haluttanut ruveta selvityksiin, niin
vastasi hän vain:

— Eikö tuo tulle sieltä perästäpäin, kunhan kerkeää.

Emäntä päätteli tämän johdosta, että Annastiina on poikennut

Tiilikaisen mökille niitä kehruuksia tietämään, ja sanoi Heikki
Piipariselle:

— Käy sinä Heikki kanssa yhteen pöytään.

— Näkyy olevan ruotsi ruualla, tuumi Heikki Piiparinen. —

Mahtuneeko tuohon enää, kun on niin monta ruumiillista miestä.

— Lyödään liha tiukempaan, niin ainahan siihen rakoon vielä yksi

laiha mahtuu, sanoi Teppo Kiiskinen.

— Ota sinäkin Heikki Piiparinen tuota karkulipässiä, kehoitti isäntä.

 — Vai jo se on kotona… kadonnut lammas, ihmetteli Heikki
Piiparinen, ja emäntä ilmoitti uunin luota:

— On se nyt… tuohan se Iivo Mutanen sen toi.

— Vai tämä livo se toi pässin, sanoi Heikki Piiparinen vain.

Piipariska oli mennyt lieden ääreen ja alkanut lämmitellä

kohmettuneita käsiään.

— Siellä on tainnut ruveta tuulemaan, kysyi emäntä.

— Yltymässäpäinhän se on, myönsi Piipariska. — Onkin kohta

semmoinen nujakka, etteivät köyhät pysy pystyssä muuten kuin kivi
kainalossa.

Ja paistattaen luisevia käsiään tulen hohteessa, valitti hän:

— Lieneekö pohjatuulta, kun oli niin kylmää, että oli koko ruumis
kontistua, vaikka kovasti käveltiin.

Teppo Kiiskinen selitti rusinasoppansa ääressä:

— Se on tuo pohjatuuli aina kylmää… tuulipa se sitten idästä

taikka lännestä.

Oli syöty, oli röyhtäyteltykin.

Miehet istuivat mikä missäkin penkeillä ja tupakoivat sekä

muljauttivat toisiinsa silloin tällöin puoleksi äkäisen, puoleksi
epäluuloisen katseen, nimittäin Aapeli Kasurinen ja Turunen toiselta
ja Iivo Mutanen toiselta puolen. Teppo Kiiskinen ja Heikki Piiparinen
pysyttelivät enemmän puolueettomina ja odottivat levollisesti
tapahtumien kehitystä.

— Ei sitä Annastiinaa vain kuulu, huomautti Aapeli Kasurinen

viimein.

Sanoi ja sylkäistä töpsäytti.

— Eihän tuota kuulu, päivitteli emäntä. — Missähän se mahtaa

oikein viipyä?

Siihen ei kukaan vastannut.

Viimein sanoi Teppo Kiiskinen vakavasti:

— Tällä tuntuu olevan oikein ikävä Annastiinaa… tällä Aapeli

Kasurisella.

Aapeli Kasurinen ei vielä vastannut. Mutta hän punastui

uhkaavasti.

— Jos sillä lienee hyvinkin kiireellistä asiaa Annastiinalle, arveli Iivo

Mutanen naama ärsyttävässä irvessä. — Mutta taitaa olla niin
kahdenkeskistä, ettei sitä saa sivulliset kuunnella.

Emäntä hymähti Iivon puheille. Osaa se tuo Mutasen Iivo!

Mutta Aapeli Kasurisen kärsivällisyys oli joutunut liian kovalle

koetukselle eikä kestänyt enää.

Hän kaivoi jonkin paketin povitaskustaan ja rasian liiviensä

taskusta, pani ne pöydälle ja sanoi mahtipontisesti:
 — Saa sen kuulla sivullekin… ei siinä ole mitään estettä enää…
tässä se on minun asiani!

— Silkkihuivi ja kultakello, selitti Pekka Turunen.

Vaiettiin. Emäntä oli ällistyneimmän näköinen.

— Voipas hitto, sanoi Teppo Kiiskinen viimein. — Nehän on oikeat

kihlat.

— Joo… kihlathan ne, myönsi Iivo Mutanen.

Ja sitten hän järäytti merkitsevällä äänenpainolla:

— Mönkkösen lesken kihlat.

— Älä valehtele! huusi Aapeli Kasurinen, ja Iivo Mutanen vakuutti:

— En minä valehtelekaan.

Tuvassa alkoi olla levotonta liikehtimistä. Miehet raapivat

lapikkaanpohjillaan permantoa ja syljeskelivät ahkerasti ja hankasivat
taas lapikkaanpohjilla syljen pois, Henriikan lapset pilkistelivät uunin
loukosta, Piipariska siunaili hiljaa, ja emäntä kaatoi
hermostuksissaan kahvipannun, jonka ääressä hän äkkiä oli
ruvennut puuhailemaan. Kaikki vesi kaatui kahvipannusta liedelle,
niin että poro tuprusi ja höyry kohosi pilvenä ylös.

— Itse minä kuulin omin korvin kaupunkimatkalla, kun sinä kehuit

ostavasi Mönkkösen leskelle kultakellon ja hopiaperät ja silkkihuivin,
selitteli Iivo Mutanen painavasti. — Katsotaanpas, onko tuossa
kellossa hopeaperät, niin nähdään.

Iivo yritti nousta, mutta Aapeli Kasurinen kirosi:

 — Perr… nykäise vaikka sormenpäilläsi minun tavaroitani, niin saat
turpaasi, niin että tupa helähtää.

— No olkoon sitten, kun et uskalla näyttää, sanoi Iivo Mutanen. —

Ja Annastiinan lupasit antaa vaikka minulle, kun et kuulu huolivan
toisten tähteistä, jauhoi hän edelleen ilkeästi virnotellen.

— Kaikki valehtelet, ryökäle! huusi Aapeli Kasurinen. — Minä en

ole sinua millään kaupunkireissulla nähnytkään…

— Minäpä näin sinut, ivaili Iivo, eikä siitä mahdotonta kaukaa

olekkaan. Muistaa kai tämä Pekka Turunen?

— Olipa tuo nyt miten tahansa, sai Pekka Turunen sanoneeksi, niin
mitäs niistä nyt enää, kun Annastiina kerran on luvattu tälle Aapeli
Kasuriselle.

— Hyvä isä sentään, ihanhan tässä menee pää sekaisin kuin

Haminan kaupunki, valitteli emäntä.

— Eipäs ole luvattu Aapeli Kasuriselle, järäytti Iivo Mutanen

painokkaasti. — Siinä sinä laskit niin pitkän valheen kuin tästä
Hirvolanniemeen edestakaisin. Minullepas on Annastiina luvattu!

— Älä valehtele, hylky! huusi Aapeli Kasurinen.

Mutta silloin emäntä todisti kovalla ja kimakalla äänellä:

— Ei se valehtelekaan, Iivo Mutanen. — Iivolle menee Annastiina,

ja Iivolta on Annastiinalla jo kihlakellokin… vaikka paikalla käyn
hakemassa piironginlootasta, jollette usko.

Aapeli Kasurinen kuunteli tätä ilmoitusta suu auki.

 Sitten hän huusi:

— Hoi, Simo Piiroinen, sano sinä nyt, kun olet isäntä talossasi,
kuka tässä on oikea sulhanen!

Mutta silloin huomattiin, ettei Simo Piiroinen ollutkaan tuvassa.

Kuultuaan emäntänsä ilmoituksen, että Annastiinalla oli jo kihlat Iivo
Mutaselta, oli hän vähin äänin pujahtanut ulos ovesta.

— No minne se Simo nyt katosi! huusi kiihtynyt Aapeli Kasurinen.

—
Tämäpähän vasta oikea kettujen kiies on tämä talo! Juokse sinä
Pekka
Turunen etsimään isäntää.

— Selvitään tässä isännättäkin, sanoi emäntä, mutta Pekka

Turunen läksi kuitenkin etsimään Simo Piiroista huudellen ulkona:

— Hoi Simo! Mihinkä sinä hävisit?

Silloin sanoi emäntä lujasti ja topakasti:

— Se on nyt uskominen, kun minä sanon! Minä olen ottanut kihlat

Iivolta Annastiinalle, ja jos Annastiinalla ei itsellään ole mitään
Iivoa vastaan, niin kyllä minä olen sanani kokoinen.

Aapeli Kasurinen ähkyi harmaana kasvoiltaan, ja Heikki Piiparinen

huomautti rauhallisesti:

— Taisi tulla syöneeksi liian lujasti pässipaistia, tämä Aapeli

Kasurinen, kun noin ähkii.

Mutta Aapeli Kasurinen ähisi:

 — Näytän minä teille… koko Piiroisen matkueelle!

Pekka Turunen oli huudellen etsinyt Simo Piiroista ympäri taloa ja

pihaa. Vihdoin löysi hän isännän tallin takaa kiusaantuneen
näköisenä seisomasta.

Nähtyään, että hänet oli löydetty, mutisi Simo Piiroinen:

— Piti lähteä vähän jäähdyttelemään… kun siellä oli niin vari, siellä
tuvassa.

— Tule hiidessä tupaan selvittämään tämä soppa, huusi Pekka

Turunen ja alkoi raahata vähän väkistelevää Simo Piiroista
muassaan.

Heidän astuessaan sisään huusi Aapeli Kasurinen:

— Mitä h—tin rinkitanssia tämä on? Annatko sinä Annastiinan

minulle vai et?

Simo Piiroinen hikoili.

— Ka… enhän minä häntä väkisten… en minä tiennyt, että hänellä

oli jo toiset kihlat…

— Ethän sinä tiennyt, matki Aapeli Kasurinen vihoissaan. — Et sinä

tiennyt… mutta tiedätkös sinä Simo Piiroinen, mikä tämä on?

Aapeli Kasurinen kaivoi velkakirjan taskustaan, piti sitä ylhäällä

ilmassa ja huusi:

— Tiedätkös sinä edes sitäkään, milloin jaksat tämän lunastaa?

 Nyt oli saapunut Iivo Mutasen suuri hetki, se hetki, jota hän oli
odotellut.

Hän kaivoi taskustaan tukun seteleitä, vei ne emännälle ja sanoi,

jyräytti kovalla äänellä:

— Antakaa nämä Simo Piiroiselle ja käskekää sen tellätä ne tuon

Kasurisen kulkkuun… että se kerrankin saa mahansa täyteen!

Nopeajärkinen Pekka Turunen oli heti huomannut, että Aapeli

Kasurinen oli tärvelemäisillään kaikki toiveensa, kun ryhtyi tällä
tärkeällä hetkellä uhkailemaan saatavallaan, ja kun hän sitten vielä
näki, että Simo Piiroiselle oli odottamatta ilmestynyt rahatkin
velkakirjan lunastusta varten, niin hyppäsi hän Aapeli Kasurisen
viereen ja kuiskasi tälle jotain korvaan.

Aapeli Kasurinen murahti, mitä, sitä eivät muut kuulleet, ja Pekka

Turunen kuiskaili taas hänen korvaansa.

Sitten nousi Aapeli Kasurinen seisomaan ja sanoi:

— Sinä kai luulet, Simo Piiroinen, että minä sitä Annastiinaa

rahojen tähden… mutta nyt sinä saatkin nähdä, mikä mies minä
olen!

Aapeli Kasurinen repi velkakirjan kappaleiksi ja kävi heittämässä

paperipalat lieteen, jossa ne heti leimahtivat tuleen.

Simo Piiroinen se vain seisoi hölmönä keskellä tupaa rahat

kädessä. Hänestä oli käsittämätöntä, minkätähden hän oli saanut
rahat, ja vielä käsittämättömämpää, minkätähden Kasurinen poltti
velkakirjan.
 — Ja nyt ei siitä velasta puhuta sen enempää, sanoi Aapeli
Kasurinen.
— Ja Iivo Mutaselle saat antaa takaisin setelirepaleensa!

Aapeli Kasurinen tempaisi rahat Simo Piiroisen kädestä, astui

penkillä istuvan Iivo Mutasen eteen, paiskasi rahat päin hänen
naamaansa ja huusi:

— Korjaa roskasi!

Iivo Mutanen keräili sata- ja viisikymmenmarkkaset lattialta, laski

ne kahteen kertaan, pisti poveensa ja hyppäsi sitten tasajalassa
Aapeli Kasurisen eteen kiljaisten:

— Sinäkö syötävä tässä tulet minun silmilleni paiskelemaan!

— Minä! karjaisi Kasurinen.

— Menkää hyvät miehet erottamaan, ennenkuin rupeavat

tappelemaan! huusi emäntä hätäissään.

— Antaapa heidän koitella, sanoi Teppo Kiiskinen.

— Vai sinä paholaisen rokonrikkoma tässä vielä Annastiinankin

veisit… ikäänkuin ei sinulle välttäisi se silmäpuoli Mönkkösen leski…
mokomallekin pirun kanssa samalla rokkariihellä olleelle kahmulle!
ärjyi Iivo Mutanen vihanvimmassa, ja hänen pienet silmänsä
tuikkivat peloittavan punaisina.

Ja Heikki Piiparinen selitti lempeästi, hartaasti, harvakseen

jurnutellen:
 — Onhan tälle… tälle Aapeli Kasuriselle, rakas Luoja kolme
hyväätyötä tehnyt: luonut, lunastanut ja rotierannut…

— Sen kun kerran paiskaan kuonoosi…! ärjyi Iivo Mutanen, mutta

Aapeli Kasurinen kiukusta puhisten, varoitti:

— Älä luule, etteivät puut piisaa kirstunlaudoiksesi, vaikka vielä

pitempikin olisit! Sanonko minä sinulle vielä toisenkin sanan…?

— Puhu vain kuin vertaisellesi! huusi Iivo Mutanen ja tölmäisi

äkkiä
Aapeli Kasurista rintaan.

Silloin Aapeli Kasurisen vanhat, kauan uinuneet tappeluvaistot

heräsivät, ja hän hihkaisi:

— Vai rupeat sinä tosiaankin tappelemaan… katso sitten miten

autuas lentää!

Aapeli Kasurinen tarrautui Iivo Mutaseen rinnuksiin, ja Teppo

Kiiskinen huomautti:

— Nyt se kohta nähdään, kummanko paidassa kaulus kestää.

— Hyvä isä… menkää hätään miehet, ennenkuin tappavat

toisensa! parkui emäntä, mutta Teppo Kiiskinen varoitti:

— Älkää menkö miehet… siinä voi joutua rutistukseen!

Aapeli Kasurinen ja Iivo Mutanen rynnistelivät ja tappelivat. Naiset

parkuivat. Henriikan lapset olivat paenneet uunille.

Iivo Mutanen ponnisteli hirmuisesti ja huusi:

 — Nyt kun minä mätkäisen sinut, niin sinusta ei jää kuin märkä
sija lattialle…

— Ja paha haju taivaalle… lisäsi Heikki Piiparinen rniettiväisesti.

Silloin aukeni tuvan ovi, ja Annastiina astui sisään.

Nähdessään tappelun pysähtyi hän hämmästyneenä ja kysyi:

— Mikä metakka tämä on?

— Sulhaset tässä vain tanssivat, kun morsian on poissa, selitti

Heikki
Piiparinen, ja Teppo Kiiskinen huusi tappelijoille:

— Nyt metsot yrittäkää, kun koppelo katsoo päältä!

Huomattuaan Annastiinan lopettivat Iivo Mutanen ja Aapeli

Kasurinen tappelun ja irtautuivat toisistaan hengästyneinä ja
pieksettyinä.

— Oli siinä oikein rakkauden ryske, ihasteli Heikki Piiparinen.

Mutta Teppo Kiiskinen sanoi:

— Kenenkäs se nyt osaa tämä Annastiina ottaa, kun kumpikin

henkiin jäivät?

Poliisi Tuomas Kontkanen, joka oli jäänyt sitomaan hevosen aitaan

ja panemaan sille heiniä eteen, astui nyt tupaan. Heikki Piiparinen
tuumi:

— Aina ne nuo poliisitkin vasta sitten tulevat, kun tappelu on

lopussa.
 Päästyään yleisestä hälinästä sen verran selville, että Iivo Mutanen
ja Aapeli Kasurinen olivat tapelleet Annastiinan takia, sanoi poliisi
Kontkanen rauhallisesti:

— Olisitte vain jatkaneet tappelua… meidät kuulutettiin tänään

Annastiinan kanssa.

— Onko se totta, Annastiina? sai emäntä Piiroinen viimein

kysyneeksi.

— Totta se on… mitäs valehtelemista siinä olisi, vastasi Annastiina.

— Se on sitten niinkuin kolmas sulhanen tänä päivänä, laski Heikki

Piiparinen, ja Teppo Kiiskinen esitti:

— Taitaa tulla sitten uusi tappelu.

Seurasi melkein minuutin pituinen äänettömyys.

— No sait sinä sitten Simo Piiroinen arvohenkilön sillä

miljoonallasi, kun yhden poliisikonstaapelin vävypojaksesi, sanoi
Aapeli Kasurinen viimein ivallisesti.

— Onhan siinä hintaa… poliisille, murahti Iivo Mutanen.

— Häh… millä miljoonalla? kyseli Simo Piiroinen älyttömänä.

— Et ole tainnut kuullakaan vielä, että Jussi-veljesi on kuollut

Ameriikassa ja jättänyt sinulle miljoonan perintöä? alkoi Pekka
Turunen kertoa.

Kun Pekka Turunen oli kertonut kaiken mitä tiesi, pyörähteli Simo
Piiroinen sekaisin päästään pöydän luona ja höpisi:
 — Miljoona… miljoona perintöä…

Emäntä ja Annastiina eivät kyenneet sanomaan mitään.

Vihdoin emäntä pudisteli itseään kuin olisi unesta herännyt, nousi

ja käveli ulos. Takaisin tullessaan oli hänellä kädessään pieni kotelo,
jonka ojensi Iivo Mutaselle sanoen:

— He, Iivo, kellosi!

Iivo Mutanen pisti kellon taskuunsa ja arveli:

— Taitaa tästä joutaa taas kotiinsa.

Iivo läksi, eikä kukaan häntä pidättänyt, ja Teppo Kiiskinen seurasi

häntä.

Mutta Simo Piiroinen pyörähteli yhä vielä kuin sokea, joka ei tiedä,
minne päin lähteä kävelemään, ja hänen huulensa höpisivät:

— Miljoona… miljoona…

— Vai on tämä appiukko saanut semmoisen perinnön, ällisteli

poliisi
Tuomas Kontkanen.

Kukaan ei ollut huomannut, milloin ovenpieleen oli ilmestynyt

rahille istumaan tuntematon, mustanpuhuva mies.

Se istui siinä pyöritellen lakkia kädessään ja seuraten

tarkkaavaisena tapahtumia.

Viimein hän sanoi Heikki Piipariseen katsoen:

 — Eikös tämä ole se sama mies, jonka kanssa muutama yö sitten
köllöteltiin samalla penkillä siellä Pötkänlahden kestikievarin tuvassa?

Heikki Piiparinen katsoi tarkemmin — oli jo alkanut hämärtää — ja

myönsi:

— Joo… silloin kun se postinkuljettaja Panhelainen luki lehdessä

siitä tämän Simo Piiroisen miljoonaperinnöstä.

— Lukihan se lehdestä, mutta valhetta se kuuluukin olleen. Nyt on

lehdessä tarkempia tietoja, ettei sitä perintöä olekaan kuin muutama
kymmenen tuhatta… ja sekin lankeaa joka penni vainajan leskelle…
sillä on näet akka Ameriikassa.

— Älä valehtele! huusi poliisi Kontkanen tuntemattomalle, mutta

tämä kaivoi lehden taskustaan ja sanoi:

— Saahan tämän lukea… tähän se on painettu.

Poliisi otti lehden vapisevin käsin, luki ja sanoi:

— Voipas vaivattu… niin näkyy olevan. Sitten antoi hän muidenkin

lukea uutisen.

— Lähtään, sanoi Aapeli Kasurinen Pekka Turuselle.

— Siellä on sinunkin hevosesi tuolla pihalla, Pekka Turunen, muisti

Tuomas Kontkanen. — Ota se sieltä.

— Ennätätte vielä valvonta-ajalla Mönkkösen lesken luo, huomautti

Heikki Piiparinen.

Sitten katsoi hän vähän uteliaana poliisi Kontkaseen ja kysyi:

— Entäs sitten?

Poliisi raapaisi korvallistaan ja sanoi:

— Tottapa se oli näin menevä.
