Series/Prefixes
The earliest and latest verified series/prefixes are shown in the
following listings. Be advised that not all series/prefixes within the
range have been verified; it’s possible that the printer skipped some
letters/numbers for unknown reasons. Also, there may be cross-overs
(i.e. the same series/prefix appears on different types or varieties),
therefore the series/prefixes shouldn’t be used as the sole determining
factor in identifying a note.
Tunisia, a de facto autonomous province of the Ottoman
Empire, was invaded by France following a raid into French-
occupied Algeria by Tunisian tribesmen, and became a French
protectorate with the signing of the Treaty of Bardo on 12 May

Sig. Mustafa Khaznadar. Intro: 1847. Signature combinations have not been assigned variety numbers
as is the standard elsewhere in The Banknote Book because doing so
would have resulted in a confusing jumble due to the fact that over
time the bank had overlapping issues with notes bearing either two
or three signatures, some printed and some handwritten. Instead,
samples of each signature have been reproduced in the following
tables, sorted chronologically based upon the terms of service in the
various offices.
Note variety descriptions list signatories’ names as they appear on
the note, from left to right, or top to bottom.

(16.11.1942 - 15.09.1944) until 1945. The notes overprinted for use in Tunisia are a subset of
the date and series ranges shown for the Algerian notes, with some
overlaps observed.
Some notes have capital letters flanking the date. These indicate

The Banknote Book Tunisia 1958 Issues
1958 Issues
These notes feature a portrait of Habib Bourguiba, who became
the first president of the independent Tunisian republic on 25
July 1957. These notes were issued on 3 November 1958. On 30
December 1958, the Tunisian dinar was disconnected from the
French franc and the country withdrew from the franc zone.
According to salesman Alexi Napier, as quoted in The Highest
Perfection: A History of De La Rue, Tunisia originally ordered all of
its new notes from Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company (BWC), but
Thomas De La Rue (TDLR) convinced Taiev Slin, the Tunisian
ambassador to England, to give half the order to TDLR. For several
years the note printing was split between BWC and TDLR, until
eventually the latter got the whole business. Ultimately BWC was
acquired by TDLR in 1986.
