Jantos Qorgyle- An aging Dornishman, and the lord commander.
Mance Rayder- A former Wildling, best friend of Jantos and Recruiter of the Watch.
Lazarus Stone- A Bastard with a scar over his eye, turned up at the wall when he was four, with no
recollection of his past except his name.
Lesser pov's will crop up from time to time.
Other Beginning Charecters- Mors Westford, First Ranger. Denys Mallister, Commander of the Shadow
Tower. Cotter Pyke Commander of Eastwatch.
This story begins a short time after Roberts Rebellion(The Crowned Stag scenario)
Lord Commander Jantos of the Nights Watch- Getting on in my years, Soon this cold will take me to the
Seven....Ive been doing my best to train the boy- Lazarus Stone, We still dont know how he made his way
here at only four. Hes shaping up to be a porper commander despite his low birth. Many among us
resent me naming him as my personal steward, believing that only those of high birth should know how
to command. Even Mance has expressed his concern over the boy, luckily thogh our dissagreement on
that has not soured him to my friendship. Sadly I have recieved reports that Lord Eddard could not spare
any men for us. I have considered, and decided to dispatch Mance off to Ironwrath, home of House
Forrester. They are known to be a house of Honor, perhaps thier lord Gregor will be able to spare the
troops, or even some supplies.
Mance Rayder, Recruiter- Jantos is sending me off to another Northern house in hopes of aid. The
wildlings have him concerned, Particularly the one they call "Sixskin" as Jantos believes he has the
makings of another "King Beyond the Wall."
The poor fool. He looks to the wildlings once again as the greatest threat to men. But I have seen the
truth. When Winter comes, no King, beyond the wall or no, shall stand against it.
Lazarus Stone- Mister Jantos asked me about the scar again. I still dont remember anything about it. He
said writing in this might help me remember something from before but....I dont think its working. Hes
been talking about the bad ones again- the Wildlings. A few of the Rangers have reported a Giant moving
toward the wall, a real Giant! He seemed worried, but Im not afraid. He always says that we guard the
realms of men, so we should be able to handle any old giant! I asked him earlier why we didnt try to take
the lands beyond the wall, but he just shook his head like I didnt make sence.... At least he says my
swordplay is going well. Hes been a good teacher, but I still see the way some of the others look at me.
They dont think I should be here. The only one thats nice to me besides Jantos is Mors. At first I was
scared of him, and his big old dog, but he stood up for me the other day, and the other brothers backed
off, mumbling something about "not wanting to mess with "the butcher"" I wonder why they call him
that?
Lord Commander Jantos- I dont believe it...I sent Mors out with a party to find the Giant, and they did...
But the Damn thing wanted to join us. "Brother...Crow" it said apparently. Mors decided to escort it back
here, crossbows trained the whole way of course. Ive never seen anything like it. It walked right up to me
and offered its hand "Me Mag Mar Tun Doh Weg, you Big Crow?" I could only assume he was asking me
if I was the lord commander, so I nodded."
"Winter come Winter Kill brother. Crow fight winter?" I informed him that protecting the realm from
anything beyond the wall was what we did. "Mag fight winter. Mag be Crow. Mag help Crow fight WInter,
and Wildlings." Mors and I were absulutely speechless.
Weve given Mag a special housing down at the new gift, more of a cell really. After he didnt try anything
we let him come out for small periods to help train the troops. Eventually we decided to name him an
honourary ranger but....I still dont trust him.
Lazarus has taken to the giant, and dubbed him "Mag the Mighty." It seems to have stuck.
Lazarus- They found him! Mag the Mighty! I never thoght Ide meet an actual giant! Mors says he doesnt
trust him, but he seems nice to me.
Everyones talkin about whos gonna be the new Commander after Mr Jantos. Seems like most people
expect First Steward Bowen. He seems nice, and he never talks about....about the moles town girls, so
he sticks to his vows. Jantos says he makes a good steward but "Doesnt Know a damn thing about a
fight."
I wonder which ones more important for being a lord commander? Mag says that "Big Crow Need
Strong. Strong is good for Big Crow."
But Old Man Aemon, before he passed away, always said that "Being a commander is a balance. You
need to command your men, command yourself, and rule when not in battle."
Im not sure what he meant by all that yet, but I think im figuring it out.
Mance- While on the way to Ironwrath, I passed throgh the lands of thier rivals, the Whitehills. It seems
lord Ludd has passed, and so his son Torren is now Lord. I encountered a rather rude young man named
Gryff.
It seems he is the new lords younger brother, a fourthborn son. He has given up of ever earning anything
for himself in his brothers shadow, and asked to join the watch. I informed him I would bring him back
with me after I spoke with Lord Gregor.
He seems like a strong lad. If nothing else he can be a builder.
Jantos- That no good Traitor! Wyl took 90 good men of the watch and escaped with them north, hoping
to carve out a place for himself in the wildling territory. Ive dispatched Mors with a few men to deal with
them. Wyl is smart, being a former Maester. He got sent her for Raping some poor girl. I never did like
the man, and he never liked us. Im worried that his betrayel might make others do the same. Hopefully
Mors can deal with this quickly.
Lazarus- I did it, I finally worked up the nerve and asked Jantos if I could be his official Squire. He said
yes! My new duties keep me double busy, but its worth it. Mors always says that the more duties a man
has, the more responsible he'll become. He left to deal with some Deserters beyond the wall. I hope he
makes it back okay.
Mors Westford, First Ranger- We tracked the Traitors to the Hardhome area. The Men grew nervous,
whispering about how Sixskin ruled these lands. Cowards. In the end we didnt even half to fight. We
came to the sight of a massacre, bodies scattered everywhere, two great wolves, along with a Direwolf
were feasting upon the remains. They seemed to be ignoring us. One of the bodies began moving so I
approached him. I recognised the bastard as one of the traitors, so I had my hound drag him by the
collar, and had an interrogation. He came out with a tale of how They had been ambushed, massacred.
Birds diving from the sky, wolves howling alla round, Shadowcats picking them off in the dark. He
described seeing a great figure sitting astride a White bear, those three wolves at his side. Sixskin. I
beheaded the traitor then and there, and I looked up to see the Direwolf staring at me. It took a look at
my hound, then at me....And I swear the beast nodded, and the three wolves departed. Perhaps there is
something to fear from this Sixskin.
Jantos- Mors returned, apparently the Traitors had been slaughtered by Sixskin. Well, at least they were
dealt with. We recieved a New arrival as well, Tyran Lannister, a Distant relation to the lord Tywin.
Apparently he took out a loan that he could not afford to pay, and thus, was sent to us. Mance Finally
returned as well, unfortunetly he was unable to bring us supplies or troops, do to the Northerners
marching to aid Lord Stannis Baratheon in his war against is brother Lord Paramount Renly, who
apparently is attempting to seize some of Stannis' lands. Mance did manage to bring back a promising
recruit, Gryff Whitehill. He has been named Spymaster of our forces in the New Gift, and is being trained
by Mag The Mighty.
Mance- It seems I have missed much while I was away. We have our very own giant, and I can tell Jantos
is getting old, his sword hanging heavy at his side, and im willing to bet that Stone is a better swordsman
than he now. It will not be long until my dear friend departs from these lands, and the cold wind takes
him.
Lazarus- I got in a fight today, with Joshua Droughtwell. Hes a little older than I am. Apparently he used
to be a Dothraki, but got captured and eventually ended up here on the wall after escaping slavery. He
talked about how poorly things are run her eand said some....some harsh things about the Lord
Commander. So I told him to stuff it, and we got into a brawl. Cotter Pyke broke it up, but he gave me
such an angry look after...I dont think Ive heard the end of this.
Jantos- Lazarus is Sixteen now. Hes come a long way. He just brought me some news, a raven from the
south. The War of The Stags has ended, Renly has been declared victor, causing his Brother Stannis to go
into hiding. Not only that, by our King Robert Baratheon is no more, Slain by the Commander of his
Kingsguard, Ser Barristan Selmy. Apparently the King attempted to slay him in a drunken rage, angry that
his most recent son had died a stillborn, and Ser Barristan was forced to defend himself. This leaves his
daughter, Jonquil Baratheon, Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and only ten years old. Not only that but one
of Stannis' former vassals, Lord Lucery's Velaryon is attempting to claim Dragonstone in the name of
Viserys Targaryen. Great change is coming to the seven kingdoms....and yet we in the north remain the
same.
Mance- Jantos has dispatched me again, this time to bear Island. Lord Jeor is a respectable man,
hopefully he will send support. The Iron Islands continue to raid us, and our coin supply is very short.
Along the way I heard news that the rebelliona gainst stannis has failed, and The plotter, Lucery's
Velaryon, has been sentenced to the wall. I suppsoe we shall have a new brother soon.
Lazarus- Today marks my seventeenth nameday, near as we can tell anyway. Jantos called me to the main
hall, and when I arrived there were many brothers of the watch gathered there. At first I was nervous,
had I done something wrong? But then I reached the Lord Commander and he said to me "Lazarus
Stone. Kneel." and I knew. I bent my knee, and he drew his sword, and tapped my shoulder swith it.
"Lazarus of Castle Black, in the name of The Warrior I charge you to be brave. In the name of The Father I
charge you to be just. In the name of the mother I charge you to defend the young and innocent. In the
name of the Maid I charge you to protect all women. In the name of the seven I charge you to be
honorable." I couldnt help it, I broke into tears, the only way to express my joy. "Rise, Ser Lazarus."
Mance- Jeor has agreed to send us a group of men, led by a man named Rogar, as well as a small
shipment of supplies. Not much, but they should be useful. Ive spoken to this Rogar a bit, he seems
brave enogh thogh also a bit rough. We are on our way back to Castle black now.
Jantos- Excellent, Mance has pulled throgh. These men will be put to good use. We had a sparring
session earlier, but it seems Im getting too old to stand even with Mance now, as even with our dulle
dblades I wound up recieving a wound. Nothing too serious, just a smack, but still... Funny, I wrote all
those years ago that I had not long left here, and yet here I am, so many years later. I am graeful to the
Seven for allowing me time to see young Laz grow into a proud man of the watch. I only hope that he
becomes Lord Commander after me, he has earned it, and would be a fine choice...but its not up to me, I
suppose. I must put my faith in the seven, that they shall see it throgh.
Lazarus- We had another deserter, Derrick, one of our best warriors. Unfortunetly he managed to
establish a foothold in wildling territory, and is claiming to be one of them now. Jantos says theres
nothing we can do about it now, so I guess Ill have to trust him. Still, it seems wrong. Derrick will get
whats coming, one day.
Mance- I have decided to take the matter of the traitor into my own hands. Jantos is convinced nothing
can be done, hes too deep into Wildling erritory...but I know thier ways. Wildlings dont trust Crows,
especially ones that take thier land and opress them. Derrick thinks hes one of them now, but he doesnt
understand. All it will take is a few words to the right people....
Jantos- A White Raven arrived today.... the message, "You should prepare. Winter is Coming."
Lazarus- We burned Mag The Mighty today. Even thogh the others distrusted him at first, they eventually
came to care for him, and thanks to him the New Gift trained our finest men for years. Ill miss him....but
now his watch has ended. The only good thing to come today is the traitor was killed, a wildiling bandit
attack.
Mance- The Cold winds are blowing in, and it gets colder everyday... But this wont be it. Its not enogh,
too slow. Just a mild winter this time. Mabye age will take me before they do.
Jantos- It seems winter has came and passed without incedent...except for one. We heard a great eerie
howling coming from the Hardhome area, as if thousands of wolves were crying all at once....in the
morning we learned why. Sixskin has died. Normally, this would be good news, but the other wildlings
seem embolened. the Chief of the Lower Frostfangs, the one the call Sealskinner, has taken much land,
and continues to take more....
Mance- It seems Im the last of the old guard. Jantos and Mors passed almost at the same time. Lazarus
led a party north, to try to surpress a group of Sealskinners Wildlings. He was killed, but most of his men
returned, and told tales of his bravery. The cold has passed, and Summer comes once more....and with it,
thier watch is ended.
New Lord Commander-Many years have passed since I said the words, and yet only now do I begin to
understand the grasp of thier meaning. In my youth I took out a loan, and when I squandered all my
wealth, and my dear cousin Tywin refused to bail me out, I was forced to leave my wife and children, and
come here to the wall. Since then I have served faithfully as a Ranger of the Nights Watch. I thogh I
would hate it, but there is a certain comraderie here, one that back home is lacking. We are the Shield
that guards the realms of men....and now is the time to prove it. The one they call "Sealskinner" has
done it, declared himself "King beyond the wall." The time has come for a great Ranging into the north,
to depose this King before he can attack the south. I am Lord Commander Tyran Lannister, and now
these Wildlings shall Hear Me Roar.
(The rest of the Jounral is covered by a thick frost no fire can thaw.)
