Engineering Lab Safety Guide

The document outlines safety procedures in case of fire, including evacuation routes and emergency contacts. It also discusses risk assessment and control measures for unsafe activities, particularly in soldering and operating machinery. A detailed risk assessment matrix is provided for soldering activities, identifying hazards, their consequences, and control measures to mitigate risks.

Week 2 Lab:

A. Activity #1
In case of fire:
1. Stay calm, leave belongings.
2. Evacuate through safety evac routes.
3. Emergency exits:
BLK E4A Staircase A / B
First 7 rows of table – A, the rest – B.
4. Assembly area
For E4A – E6 Carpark
5. Listen and comply with all instructions from instructors.
Emergency contacts:
Campus security 24Hrs: 68741616
Ambulance: 995 (meanwhile call campus security)

B. Activity #2
Video ‘This is Unsafe!’.
1. Identify risks - assess risks – implement control.
2. Hierarchy of controls: Priority: Eliminate hazards, substitute the hazard, implement
engineering controls, administrative controls, personal protection equipment.
Video of tensile testing machine.
1. Unsafe acts: Approaching the machine closely with face and tampering with test
object while the machine is running, without protection of any sort.
2. Controls suggested:
Engineering control: Machine guard and barriers with stoppers.
Administrative: Specialized training for operators, laboratory rules (such as no
touching or opening of machine guard unless the machine is turned off, no operation
allowed without professional supervision).
PPE: Protective goggles, gloves and ear masks.

C. Activity #3
Risk assessment for soldering activities.

Severity Categories
Level Human (Impact to Physical Biological Impact Environmental Damage Property

(1) Minor No Injury or light injury May not cause human disease, if does, the disease is unlikely to spread Reversible Up to $5,000
requiring only first aid to the community and there is usually effective prophylaxis or treatment
treatment (MC < 4 days MC) available;
(2) Moderate Any injury/ill health leading Can cause severe human disease, not ordinarily spread by casual Reversible but takes years $5,001 to
to ≥ 4 days MC or ≥ 1 day contact from one individual to another; it may spread to the community, $50,000
hospitalisation or leads to but there is usually effective prophylaxis or treatment available
temporary disability
(3) Major Fatality, permanent Can cause lethal human disease, may be readily transmitted from one Irreversible More than
Disability or life threatening individual to another, or from animal to human or vice-versa directly or $50,000
disease indirectly, or casual contact, it may spread to the community; usually no
effective prophylaxis or treatment available

Likelihood Categories

(1) Remote Undesired event which may occur but unlikely, once in 5 years
(2) Possible Undesired event which is probable, once in a year
(3) Frequent Undesired event which probably occur in most circumstances, once or more in a month

Risk Level and Acceptability Criteria

Acceptability
Risk Score Risk Level Recommended Actions
of Risk
No additional risk control measures required. To continue to monitor to ensure risk do not escalate to higher level.
<3 Low Risk Acceptable
Acceptable to carry out the work activity; however, task need to be reviewed to bring risk level to As Low As Reasonably
Practicable.
Moderately
3–4 Medium Risk
Acceptable
Interim control measures such as administrative controls can be implemented. Supervisory oversight required.

Job must not be carried out until risk level is brought to at least medium risk level.

Risk controls should not be overly dependant on personal protective equipment. Controls measures should focus on
>4 High Risk Not Acceptable Elimination, substitution and engineering controls.

Immediate Management intervention required to ensure risk being brought down to at least medium level before work can
be commenced.
