Mathematics Lesson Plan: Grade 5 TERM 3: July - September

This Grade 5 mathematics lesson plan focuses on common fractions, aiming for students to solve problems involving grouping and sharing by the end of the lesson. The lesson includes a review of prior knowledge, teaching activities using DBE workbooks, and emphasizes the importance of homework for mastery of concepts. Key learning activities involve identifying and calculating fractions from visual representations and sharing equally among groups.

MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN

GRADE 5
TERM 3: July – September

PROVINCE:

DISTRICT:

SCHOOL:

TEACHER’S NAME:

DATE:

DURATION: 1 Hour

1. TOPIC: COMMON FRACTIONS (Lesson 4)

2. CONCEPTS & SKILLS TO BE ACHIEVED:

By the end of the lesson, learners should know and be able to:
Solving problems
• Solve problems in contexts involving common fractions, including grouping and
sharing

Sasol Inzalo Book, DBE workbook 1, Textbooks

3. RESOURCES:

In Grade 4 the learners learnt about:

Solving problems:
4. PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
Solve problems in contexts involving fractions, including grouping
and equal sharing
5. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF HOMEWORK (suggested time: 10 minutes)
Homework provides an opportunity for teachers to track learners’ progress in the mastery of mathematics
concepts and to identify the problematic areas which require immediate attention. Therefore it is
recommended that you place more focus on addressing errors from learner responses that may later
become misconceptions.

6. INTRODUCTION (Suggested time: 5 Minutes)

7. LESSON PRESENTATION/DEVELOPMENT (Suggested time: 20 minutes)
Teaching activities Learning activities
Open DBE Workbook: Worksheet 73 (page18) and let the learners tell you what they see in the (Learners are expected
picture. Discuss with them that we are going to solving problems that are part of this picture and to:
then solve fractions of whole numbers. Ask them to specifically look at the trees and count how
many are light green and how many are dark green. Now discuss with them how we would write
the fraction of light green trees and then dark green trees. Write these two fractions on the board (
8 3
and ).
11 11
Point to the numerator, namely 8, and ask what it represents, and then point to the denominator,
namely 11, and ask what it represents. (The 8 represents the number of light green trees and 11
represent the total number of trees in the park.)
Let them discuss in pairs what would happen to the fraction if one darker green tree was planted
and two light green trees were removed. Discuss the answer as a class and write the new
fractions on the board. As a class read through question 1 of worksheet 70 and complete.
1
Write the following on the board: of 12
4
Ask them what this means. They should be able to tell you that we have to work out what a quarter
of 12is.
They could also phrase it as follows: if we share 12 equally amongst 4 groups, we need to
calculate how many will be in one group.
Ask them to work in pairs to solve the problem, and encourage them to make use of diagrams.

Explain to them that this diagram represents 12 shared equally amongst 4. If we are asked to
1 1
calculate of 12, we count the number of circles in one group, of 12 = 3 . Ask them if they
4 4
can calculate the following:
1
of 12 (Answer is 6)
4

of 12 (Answer is 9)

9. CONSOLIDATION/CONCLUSION & HOMEWORK (Suggested time: 5 minutes)

a) Emphasis that:

• A fraction can be a part of a whole where the whole is a single object.

• And also a part of a whole where the whole is a collection of objects.
• Sharing equally means everyone get the same.

b) Homework

The primary purpose of Homework is to give each learner an opportunity to demonstrate

mastery of mathematics skills taught in class. Therefore Homework should be purposeful and
the principle of ‘Less is more’ is recommended, i.e. give learners few high quality activities that
address variety of skills than many activities that do not enhance learners’ conceptual
understanding.
Carefully select appropriate activities from the DBE textbooks, workbooks and/or textbooks for
learners’ homework. The selected activities should address different cognitive levels.
