BIOLOGY

CHAPTER -5

THE FUNDAMENTAL UNIT OF LIFE

Assignment part- I

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS

1. The process of plasmolysis in plant cell is defined as:

(a) Breakdown of plasma membrane in hypotonic solution.
(b) Shrinkage of cytoplasm in hypertonic medium.
(c) Shrinkage of Nucleoplasm.
(d) None of these.

2. Which out of the following is living?

(a) Plasma membrane
(b) Cell-wall
(c) Protoplasm
(d) Nucleus

a. (a), (c) and (d) are correct

b. (b) and (c) are correct
c. All of these
d. (a) and (b) are correct

FILL IN THE BLANKS

3. Cell membrane is made up of _____, _____ and _____ .

4. Cell theory was expanded by ________.
5. Outer membrane of plant cell is________.
6. _______ and _______ gave fluid mosaic model.

ONE MARKS QUESTIONS

7. What is hypertonic solution?

8. Define plasmolysis?
9. Why virus is an exception of cell theory?

ASSERTIONS AND REASONS

Directions: In the following questions, a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a
statement of reason (R). Mark the correct choice as:
(a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(c) Assertion (A) is true but reason (R) is false.
(d) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.

10. Assertion: Cell wall is a non-living part of the cell.

Reason: It offers protection, definite shape and support.

11. Assertion: Plasma membrane is selectively permeable.

Reason: Plasma membrane allows some molecules to pass through it more
easily than others.

THREE MARKS QUESTIONS

12. Who discovered cell and how?

13. “The cells which do not possess a well-defined nucleus. These cells are primitive
without having membrane-bound organelles.” Identify and explain.

FIVE MARKS QUESTIONS

14. Differentiate between three types of solutions?

15. Draw and label diagrams of plant cell and animal cell.
16. Differentiate between nucleus and nucleoid?

CASE STUDY

17. Answer Question numbers 17 A to D based on your understanding of the

following paragraph and the related study concepts:
All living Organisms are made up of cells and these cells perform all the functions
essential for the survival of the Organism e.g. Respiration, digestion, excretion etc. In
unicellular organisms, a single cell carries out all these functions and in multicellular
organisms’ different group of cells carry out different functions. Cells were first
discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665. He observed the cells in a cork slice with the
help of a primitive microscope. Leeuwenhoek (1674), with the improved microscope,
discovered the free-living cells in pond water for the first time. It was Robert Brown in
1831 who discovered the nucleus in the cell. Purkinje in 1839 coined the term
‘protoplasm’ for the fluid substance of the cell.

A. What is protoplasm?
(a) Unit of life
(b) Cell organelle
(c) Fluid substance of the cell.
(d) Cytoplasm
B. Which of these statements is true about the cell?
(a) All organisms are made up of cell
(b) Cell is the basic unit of life
(c) Cell is responsible for different metabolic functions
(d) All above
C. Who discovered the nucleus in the cell?
(a) Robert Hooke
(b) Leeuwenhoek
(c) Robert Brown
(d) T. Schwann
D. Which function is essential for an organism’s survival?
(a) Respiration
(b) Excretion
(c) Both (a) and (b)
(d) None
