1. A steam engine working on Rankine cycle operates between
1.95 MPa, 250ºC and 14 kPa. If engine consumes steam at the
rate of 0.086 kg per second, determine Rankine cycle
efficiency, neglecting pump work. Also, find Rankine cycle
efficiency considering pump work. [58.8%]
2. In a steam power plant working on boiler pressure of 80 bar
and condenser pressure of 0.075 bar determine cycle efficiency
considering it to work on Carnot cycle. [44.9%]
3. A reheat cycle operates between 80 bar and 0.075 bar.
Temperature of steam entering turbine is 600ºC and first stage
of expansion is carried out till the steam becomes dry
saturated. Subsequently steam is reheated up to the initial
temperature at inlet. Neglecting pump work determine efficiency
and specific steam consumption in kg/hp·hr. [42.5%, 141 kg/hp-
hr]
4. An ideal reheat Rankine cycle is characterized by a steam
generator pressure of 10 MPa, superheat temperature of both
the reheated steam and inlet turbine steam of 550oC, reheat
pressure of 1000 kPa, and a condenser pressure of 10 kPa.
Determine the cycle efficiency and compare it to the cycle
efficiency of an ideal Rankine cycle without reheat.
5. 15.22 A small chemical plant uses steam in its production area.
A decision was made to use a reheat cycle with steam entering
the turbine at 8.5 MPa and 480°C, being reheated to 440oC at
1.2 MPa, and condensing at 7 kPa. Determine (a) the net work
per kg; (b) what percentage of the total heat supplied is
constituted by the reheat; (c) the cycle efficiency; (d) the T-s
diagram.
6. An ideal regenerative Rankine cycle has a steam generator
outlet pressure of 10 MPa and temperature of 550oC. The
condenser pressure is 10 kPa, and extraction for one stage of
regenerative heating occurs at 1000 kPa. Determine the cycle
efficiency,
7. Consider a regenerative cycle using steam as the working fluid.
Steam leaves the boiler and enters the turbine at 4 MPa,
400◦C. After expansion to 400 kPa, some of the steam is
extracted from the turbine to heat the feedwater in an open
feedwater heater. The pressure in the feedwater heater is 400
kPa, and the water leaving it is saturated liquid at 400 kPa. The
steam not extracted expands to 10 kPa. Determine the cycle
efficiency.
8. Steam at 6.2 MPa and 500oC is received by a regenerative
engine. Extraction for feedwater heating occurs at 3 MPa and
again at 1.4 MPa, with remaining steam expanding at 0.0065
MPa. For the ideal cycle with trottle flow of 54,500 kg/hr, find (a)
the hourly quantities of steam extracted, (b) the turbine work in
kW, and (c) the cycle thermal efficiency.
