This procedure specifies recommended method for magnetic partial examination to detect
cracks and other discontinuities on or near the surface of ferromagnetic material. This
procedure covers the general requirement and technique to be use for examination.
2.0 ACCEPTANCE STANDERD:
 ARTICLE 1, ASME Sec. V
 ASME Sec. VIII Div. I
3.0 QULIFICATION OF PERSONAL FOR EXAMINATION:
Personnel caring out MT shall be qualified to level I or Level II in MT as per the
guidelines of ASNT-TC-1A OF ASNT, however the interpretations will be done by
ASNT – TC – 1A of level II
4.0 MATERIALS:
The ferromagnetic particle used as an examination medium shall be either wet or dry
for non – florescent.
5.0 TECHNIQUE - YOKE METHOD:
This method shall apply to detect discontinuities that are open to surface of the parts.
This technique alternating or direct current electromagnetic yoke or permanent
magnet yokes shall be used.
6.0 INSTRUMENT:
A) The magnetizing force of yokes shall be checked at least once year, or
whenever yoke has been damaged. If a yoke has not been in use for a year or
more, a check shall be done prior to first use
B) Each alternating current electromagnetic yoke shall have a lifting power of at
least 10 lb at the maximum pole spacing that will be used.
C) Each direct current or permanent magnetic yoke shall have a lifting power at
least 40 lb at the maximum pole spacing that will be used.
7.0 EXAMINATION MEDIUM:
7.1 Dry Powder:
The color of the particles (dry power) shall provide adequate contrast with
surface being examined. Magnetic particle test shall not perform if the surface
temperature of parts exceed 600° F

7.2 Wet Particle:

The color of the particles shall provide adequate contrast with surface being
examined. Temperature of wet particle suspension and the surface of the parts
shall not exceed 135°F. Black Power Suspended in water shall be used.
Concentration of bath shall be 1.2 to 2.4 ml per 100 ml. This shall be verified
by settling test using peer shaped centrifuge pump.
8.0 SURFACE CONDITION:
a) Satisfactory results are usually obtained when the surface are the surface in the
as-welded, as-rolled, as-cast, or as-forged condition. However, surface

preparation by grinding or machining may be necessary where surface

irregularities could mask indications due to discontinuities.
b) Prior to magnetic particle examination, the surface to be examined and
adjacent areas within at least 1 in. shall be dry free of all dirt, grease, lint,
scale, welding flux, spatter, oil or other extraneous matter that could interfere
with examination.
c) Cleaning may be accomplished using detergents, organic solvent, descaling
solution, paint removers, vapor degassing, sand or grit blasting, or ultrasonic
cleaning methods.
9.0 STAGE INSPECTION:
After Root Run and Final Run Welding.
10.0 CALIBRATION OF EQUIPMENT:
 FREQUENCY:
Each piece of magnetizing equipment with armature shall be calibrated at least
once in year or whenever the equipment has been subjected to major electric
repair, periodic overhaul or damaged.
 PROCEDURE:
The accuracy of the unit meter shall be verified annually by equipment
traceable to national standard. Comparative reading shall be taken for at least
three different current output levels encompassing the usable range.
 TOLERANCE:
The unit meter reading shall not deviate by more than ± 10% of full scale,
relative to the actual current value shown by test meter.

11.0 MAGNETIZING FIELD ADEQUACY AND DIRECTION:

Adequacy and direction of the magnetizing field shall be verified using ASTM
magnetic Particle field indicator. The indicator shall be positioned on the surface to be
examined. When using this indicator, a suitable flux or field strength is indicated
when a clearly defined Magnetic particle forms across the copper face of the indicator
when the magnetic particles are applied simultaneous with magnetizing force.
When a clearly defined line of particles is not formed in the desired direction, the
magnetizing technique shall be changed or adjusted.
12.0 EXAMINATION:
Direction of Examination:

At least separate examination shall be performed on each area. During the

second’s examination, the lines of magnetic flux shall be approximately
perpendicular to those used during the first examination.

The yoke is positioned on the surface to be examined and the

magnetizing current turned on. Detecting medium shall be applied and excess
of the medium
removed, while the current is on. Sufficient time shall be given for the
indication to build up before the current is turned off. The area of coverage
shall be maximum distance of one forth spacing on either side of a line
joining the two poles considered to be not greater than the area of circle
inscribed between the pole pieces.
Examination shall be done under good lighting condition. The intensity
of the visible light at surface of examination shall be minimum 500 Lux.

13.0 INTERPRETATION & EVALUATION:

Indication with dimensions greater than 1/16” (1.5 mm) shall be considered as
relevant.
All relevant indication shall be evaluated in terms of following acceptance criteria.:

A] Any linear indication with length greater than 1.5 mm shall be not acceptable.
B] Any rounded indication greater than 2 mm shall be not acceptable.

REPAIRED AREA:
Repaired areas, if any, shall be re-examined by the same procedure used for
original detection.
