Assignments Sheet No. 3 Sewage Treatment and Disposal
6th Sem Civil Engg.
1. A single–stage trickling filter is designed for an organic loading of 10,000 kg of BOD in raw sewage per
hectare meter per day with a recirculation ratio of 1.4 .The filter treats a flow of 4 MLD of raw sewage
with BOD of 220 mg/l. Using NRC formula, determine the strength of the effluent.

2. Find out the efficiency of a 30 m diameter and 1 m deep single stage high rate trickling filter for the
following data:
(i) Sewage flow = 4.5 MLD; (ii) Recirculation ratio = 1.4; (iii) BOD of the raw sewage = 250 mg/l;
(iv) BOD removal in Primary tank = 25 %.

3. Determine the dimensions of high rate trickling filter for the following data:
(i) Sewage flow = 3.0 MLD; (ii) Recirculation ratio = 1.5; (iii) BOD of the raw sewage = 250 mg/l;
(iv) BOD removal in Primary tank = 25 %; (v) Final effluent BOD desired = 30 mg/l.

4. For a sewage flow of 6 MLD and BOD5 of 150 mg/l , determine the depth and the volume of trickling
filter, taking a surface loading of 2500 l/m2/d and an organic loading of 0.175 kg/m2/d. Also determine
the efficiency of filter unit using NRC equation.
5. A sewage, having flow of 20 MLD and BOD5 = 200 mg/L is treated in conventional activated sludge
process. Find out the following (i) volume of aeration tank (ii) hydraulic retention time (iii)
volumetric loading in kg/m3. (iv) Return sludge ratio. Assume F/M = 0.22 , MLSS = 3000 mg/L, SVI =
100.

6. Determine the following for design of an oxidation ditch. (i) Influent rate and influent BOD (ii)
Volume (iii) Volumetric loading rate (iv) Hydraulic loading rate (v) Return sludge ratio. (and also check
your design) for the following data: population = 5000; sewage flow rate = 120 lpcd; organic loading =
40 g BOD/capita/day; permissible BOD of effluents = 20 mg/l.

7. Design an oxidation pond with inlet pipe for treating sewage with 5000 persons contributing 120 lpcd
of sewage. BOD5 of sewage is 300 ppm. Assume sewage flow = 0.9 m/s; Sp. gravity of sewage = 1.1;
daily flow for 8 hours; organic loading as 300 kg/ha/day. Give a sketch of your design.

8. Design an oxidation pond for population 6000 and sewage flow of 200 lpcd , with BOD5= 220 mg/l
and suspended solids = 200 mg/l.

9. Design a septic tank for 200 persons for wastewater @ 120 lpcd. Also design the soak pit. Draw a free
hand sketch of septic tank.

10. Draw a free hand sketch of the followings:

[a] Flow diagram of a conventional sewage treatment plant using high rate tricking filter.
[b] Flow diagram of a conventional sewage treatment plant using Activated sludge process.
[c] Septic tank and soak pit.
[d] Oxidation pond.
[e] Oxidation ditch.
