NATIONAL MOUNTAIN DAY
Did you know that Japan has a National Mountain Day? It’s a day to celebrate all that
is good about the mountain. We asked three nature lovers to tell us what they have
enjoyed (or maybe haven’t enjoyed) about their visit to the mountains.
A: Lucy
My grandpa lives near the Avatar Hallelujah mountain in the Human National Park in
China. You’ve probably heard about it because it has the same name as a very popular
film. I’ve been there twice, but the weather was terrible. The last time I was there I
couldn’t see much because it was rainy and foggy all day. The best thing I saw there
were the monkeys- they made me laugh. One of them stole my sister’s sweets!
B: Chloe
I love snowboarding and walking with my family. My dad’s planned some great trips and
we’ve seen some fantastic places. This year we’ve climbed the Matterhorn mountain in
Switzerland. We stayed in an igloo village! The views were amazing. A train goes to the
top of the mountain, but it’s more fun to climb it on foot. Did you know a famous
chocolate bar has a picture of the Matterhown with a bear on it?
C: Grace
I haven’t climbed a lot of mountains, but last year I went up Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa
with my geography class. The days were warm, but the temperature was often below zero
in the evening. One night I slept in all my clothes! At the top, there’s a box with a book
inside it. Lots of people have written in it about their experiences on the mountain. I
didn’t know what to write, so I just put “Amazing”
