COORDINATORS:
Over the past one and a half decades, significant advancements have emerged in
the field of structural steel design, contributing extensively to the infrastructure
sector in design and construction. These advancements include concepts such as
limit state design, composite construction, and earthquake-resistant design. In line
with these developments, Indian codes (e.g., BIS, IRC) have been revised to
incorporate modern methodologies and principles.
The Institute for Steel Development and Growth (INSDAG) has developed comprehensive
teaching resource material on structural steel design for faculty members of
Civil/Structural Engineering departments. This material, prepared under the guidance of
Dr. R. Narayanan—an eminent academic with decades of teaching experience in the UK,
US, and India—comprises 25 chapters and has recently been updated by IIT Hyderabad. It
will serve as the primary course material for the training program.
The Faculty of Technology and Engineering as its stands today was formed
along with the establishment of The Maharaja Sayajirao University in 1949. It
boasts of a heritage structure, spacious classrooms and modern state of art
laboratories. The total number of academic programes across the 14
departments is 45 including the Undergraduate (B.E), Post Graduate (M. E.) &
Applied Science (M. Sc.). The B.E program is among the most sought after in the
State of Gujarat. Apart from these degree programs, all departments offer Ph. D.
degrees with guiding faculty from reputed Institutes of India. Recognizing the
teaching and the academic standards of the Faculty, various private industries
and also Government of Gujarat have instituted four Centres of Excellence in the
Faculty.
Department of Applied Mechanics and Structural Engineering
The Department of Applied Mechanics and Structural Engineering is one of the
oldest departments of Faculty of Technology and Engineering of the M. S. University
of Baroda. The growth of the department is largely due to its Post-graduate degree
programmes in Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Fracture
Mechanics. The department has received a number of industry consultancy projects
and has also been catering the needs of Private Sectors, Government Organizations
and Industries situated in and around Baroda by providing them material testing
facilities.
INSDAG has taken up the responsibility to facilitate revision of the code with active
participation of IIT Madras, SERC, ANNA University and a number of Consultants /
Fabricators / Prime Contractors etc.
Resource Persons: Experts from MS University, IIT Hyderabad, VNIT, SVNIT, BVM, GTU,
