Tutorial 8: (Static force analysis)

Name Class

Question 1:
The reaction moment M12 on link 2 for the force P and moment M14 acting on the four-bar
crank-rocker linkage is shown in Figure. Here, O2O4 = 700 mm, O2A = 200 mm, AC = 700
mm, O4C = 350 mm, AB = 400 mm and θ2 = 60˚. Draw the configuration to a scale of 1 cm
= 100 mm.
(a) Determine the reaction moment M12, when
(i) P = 350 N and M14 = 0 Nm
(ii) P = 0 N and M14 = 45 Nm
(iii) P = 350 N and M14 = 45 Nm

Question 2:
In the mechanism shown, sketch a free-body diagram of each link, and determine the force P
that is necessary for equilibrium if T12=90 N-m and Ө = 90°.

Question 3:
Draw a free-body diagram for each of the members of the mechanism shown, and find the
magnitude and direction of all the forces and moments. Compute the torque applied to link 2
to maintain static equilibrium. Link 2 is horizontal.

Question 4:
For the shaper mechanism shown in Figure, a shaping force of P = 2.0 kN is required for the
configuration, where θ = 30˚. Here, O2A = 75 mm, O 4B = 400 mm BC = 200 mm. Draw the
configuration diagram to a scale of 1 mm = 5 mm. Determine the torque T12 needed for
equilibrium.

Question 5:
Determine the reactions on the collar at A and the pin at C. The collar fits over a smooth rod, and rod AB is
fixed connected to the collar.

Question 6:
The toggle clamp is subjected to a force F at the handle. Determine the vertical clamping force acting at E

Question 7:
The engine hoist is used to support the 200-kg engine. Determine the force acting in the hydraulic cylinder
AB, the horizontal and vertical components of force at the pin C, and the reactions at the fixed support D
