instances of many other ways in our daily lives?
the new lesson The teacher will then present examples of mixtures that can be
separated using filtration, such as:
 Coffee grounds in water
 Tea leaves in hot water
 Calamansi juice with pulp or seeds
Ask the pupils to identify these mixtures and then have them
perform the separation using filtration. Afterward, ask them to share
their observations about the process.

D. Discussing new Explain the concept of filtering and how it works to separate solid-
concepts and liquid mixtures.
practicing new
skills #1 Filtration is a process used to separate solid particles from a
liquid or gas. This is done using a filter medium, which is a special
material that lets the liquid or gas pass through but catches the solid
particles.
In filtration process, the liquid part collected is called the
filtrate and the solid part that remained on the filter is called the
residue.
Examples of Filter Media:
Cloth , Filter Paper, mesh

Examples of mixtures that can be separated by filtration:

Milk from grated coconut

Tea leaves from hot water
Sand from water
Stones from water
Residues from used oil

E. Discussing new Activity 1

concepts and Pop the Balloon: Filtration Fun
practicing new
skills #2 For the "Pop the Balloon : Filtration Fun!" activity, the pupil will
choose a balloon and pop it to find a question about separating
mixtures by filtration. After popping the balloon, the pupil will read
the question aloud and answer it orally, saying "Yes" or "No" based
on whether the mixture can be separated by filtration.

F. Developing Activity 2

b. fruit salad mixture d. All of the above.

G. Finding Group Activity

practical
applications of Let’s Filter
concepts and
skills in daily The teacher will group the pupils into 5. Every group will be given
living an activity card. The activity card serves as guide on the activity that
they are going to perform.
All the members of the group must work as a team.
After the activity , write the results on a cartolina. The teacher
will let the pupils report their work in front of the class.
(Ask the pupils about the standards for group work before starting
the activity.)

Guide Questions in the Group Activity:

1. What do you see in the filtered water that was not in the dirty
water?
2. How much clean water did you get, and how much dirty water did
you start with? Compare it. (Integration of
Mathematics/Numeracy)
3. Which layer of the filter helped the most with cleaning the water?
4. How did the layers of the filter help clean the water?

Why is it important to filter the drinking water and what are the
potential health risks with consuming unfiltered water?
(Integration of Values and Health Subject)

The teacher can also add that in the human body, the kidneys
function as natural filters. They separate waste products, excess
salts, and excess water from the blood, creating urine. The filtration
process in the kidneys removes harmful substances and maintains
the body's chemical balance. (Note that this will be also tackled
on the second quarter)

Activity Card: DIY Water Filter

Objective: Create a homemade water filter to understand how different materials can
purify dirty water.

Materials:
o Cotton
o Sand
o Charcoal
o Small rocks or pebbles
o Plastic bottles
o Dirty water
o Graduated cylinders or measuring cups

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Bottle:

o Cut the bottom off a plastic bottle. This will be the top of your filter.
2. Layer the Filter:
o Place a layer of cotton at the bottom of the bottle (this will be the first layer to
catch larger particles).
o Add a layer of charcoal on top of the cotton (to help remove impurities and
improve taste).
o Add a layer of sand above the charcoal (to filter out smaller particles).
o Add a layer of small rocks or pebbles at the top (to support the other layers
and prevent clogging).
3. Filter the Water:
o Measure 500 mL of dirty water using a graduated cylinder or measuring cup.
o Pour the dirty water into the bottle, letting it pass through each layer.
o Collect the filtered water from the bottom of the bottle.
o Measure the volume of the filtered water
4. Observe and Discuss:
○ Look at the filtered water and compare it to the dirty water.
○ Measure how much clean water you collected.

Guide Questions:
1. What do you see in the filtered water that was not in the dirty water?
2. How much clean water did you get, and how much dirty water did you start with?
Compare it.

1. What is filtering/filtration?
ANSWER: Filtration is a process used to separate solid particles from a liquid or gas.

2. How do you describe filtration as one of the techniques in separating mixtures?

ANSWER: In filtration, It uses materials like cloth, paper to trap the solid parts while letting
the liquid flow through. We use this method in everyday activities like making coconut milk
or brewing coffee.

3.. Why is it important to use filtering/filtration to separate solid particles from liquids in
everyday life?
ANSWER: Filtering is important in everyday life because it helps remove unwanted solid
particles from liquids, making them cleaner and safer to use

Why is it important to filter the drinking water and what are the potential health risks with
consuming unfiltered water?
ANSWER: Filtering drinking water is important because it removes harmful particles,
bacteria, and impurities that can cause illness.
